To filter... or one.

Hi all,
I have recently bought a new camera and want to try some filtered effects. I see that there are two types, a threaded version that screws directly on to the lens and square ones that need a mounting attachment.
I would be grateful for pros and cons

It sort of depends on the filter effect which is the best type...

for Strong ND filters (10 stop for example) a screw in filter is good as it stops light leaks around the edge of the holders.

For Protection filters (UV) obviously a screw in filter is more likely to protect the lens

for polarising filters, again the screw in ones help avoid edge light leaks.

However...

for any gradient filters (nd grads for sky exposure compensation etc) the square (well-oblong) ones are better as you can slide the filter up/down to match the horizon.

Also - the square filters are generally cheaper if you have mixed diameter lenses to deal with - you buy the filters and holder, and a cheap £2 adaptor ring for each lens you'll be using 'em on. With screw filters, your only option is to buy for the largest diameter lens (£££££££ - especiallly pola. filters in 77mm or above!) and a step-up ring for each lens.
