To D700 or not to D700?

lol I forgot your's was a D3 and wondered why the heck you wanted to auto rotate images :cuckoo: What's that got to do with shifting AF points? :lol:

Helps if it's the right camera :thinking:
 
sorry :D It only works with the cam in portrait mode though, be nice if it did it in both :razz:

I used Nikon film SLRs and went over to Canon, largely due to reading an article by a pro landscape photographer who raved about the 5D's quality. (At the time, there was nothing else comparable on the market.)

A month after I bought my 5D, Nikon brought out the D700 :(

But don't be sad.. I upgraded to the 5D mk II, which suits my style of photography perfectly (landscapes, portraits, candid shots, available light) and more than gives the D700 a run for its money in the quality stakes. Plus you've got access to all those lovely (and a bit more affordable) Canon lenses :love:

The 5DII was certainly very very tempting and I already have a bag full of lenses and it would have made perfect sense for me to just go and get one!

The only fly in that particular ointment was the AF system. I love the 1Ds AF with the 51 point AF, It's lightening quick and once it has it, it does not let go. But the 5D AF is a bit pants and useless with anything quick. That's what really swayed me to the D700. I can have both the High ISO and the 51 point AF in one body. And having two the same is a bonus :)
 
i bought a d700 late last year, the only thing is, its so good i sold my d2xs and bought another,
brillant camera, for the money u cant go wrong

Indeed matey, I've had a good play with my buddies 5DmkII and it's a lovely camera but I can't get to grips with the cramped AF points, sluggishness and sloooow FPS.
Didn't want a mkIII as it was a 1.3 crop and all the horror stories concerning errors, a 1DsmkIII looked nice but again the frame rate was too slow for action and the prices of second hand sMkII's at the time was laughable.

I think this is the clincher for most folk when it comes to continuing the investment or upgrading.
I had no plans on switching brands nearly 2 years ago, but when actually having enough cash to move to a pro body, I just couldn't get on with Canon's feature splitting across the models - AF, sensor size and frame rate etc.
Your really buggered if you shoot a variety of categories, or simply prefer full frame to a crop.

It's possible that we could see this altered over the next few major releases maybe. :shrug:
 
They'll not discontinue the D700 for a D700X - but they will when they release the D700S.
 
These rumours are starting to gather flesh now that the Nikon press conference is this week. Not sure how long it's been there, but on my check for D700 prices again today, I found this page for the D700x set up and ready to go on Digitaldepot's website:
