To charge or not to charge

Absloutely on the nose. I couldn't agree more.
And he's damn right about how its the organizations with the most money that want stuff for free.

When I was a performer I was hired with some other guys to work at the fiftieth birthday party of this guy's wife. Now this guy built a large out of town complex (which will remain nameless), on the outskirts of Sheffield, so he really wasn't short of a bob or two. The location for this party was a theme from his wife's favourite book. There was a complete stage and a forest with a frozen lake where the guests sat to eat, all built in a huge marquee. Just the setting cost £500,000 and that was without the bills for the performers like us and All Saints and one or two others.

It took us 9 months and a call to equity to get paid.

And wasn't it Miichael Heseltine who boasted that he never paid a bill until the very last minute, and then some.

Be careful if you vote tory....

please learn from it :)

even if you would be prepared to shoot it for free...charge SOMETHING. otherwise it just devalues photography for everyone :(

Well the guy has hit the nail on the head...

I value my work (not that I'm a pro tog) but I have used my camera, lens etc. that I have paid money for and also read countless books and spent hours in the field so for me, I would never give any images for free, unless they are for a charitable cause, in which the images would simply be "lent", with me retaining copyright to them..
 
Too, too true. I work in the music industry so am well aware of how giving something away for free devalues the whole industry.
 
Guys, have you never done free shoots for family and friends while you were learning?

I'm just learning and for all I do get taken advantage of and I know it, I don't think that I could charge family and friends, especially when I'm not sure if I could come up with what they want.

I would like to know this answer Because i was suppose to do Some picture's for a friend for free. I will have my copyright on them since I'm doing it for free.
I don't mind doing it for free as long as i get the credit for taking them.
