That is the question....

I've been toying with the idea of switching my 20D little use sub 4k....mint condition for a 5d

The switch would mean I'd have to lose the bulky feeling of the 20d with the grip attached as funds won't stretch to a grip as well as the body at this moment in time, I'll also have to look for another macro lens too as the 60mm ef-s won't fit.

so..............do i........don't i ?




or i could just buy a new tripod head instead

I have a grip on my 30d. Don't really need it because the bp511 battery lasts for ages. Hardly ever use the portrait mode either.

I quite like the feel of the 20d+grip though as it helps balance the camera when a heavy lens is fitted.

Personally, I prefer the feel of my 5D over the 20D ... but I guess its just what you get used to.
I guess you have to ask yourself why you want the new toy.
Peeps are forever saying the 5D isnt too good for sport (too slow) though as you know its well rated for landscapes & portraiture.

I came in for a bit of stick last year when I dived in & got the 5D for my first DSLR but, my intention has been to 'grow into it' and concentrate my spends on adding to the rest of my equipment along the way.
I see no need for me to upgrade my body in the forseeable future.... oooh err!

Obvious question and one I'm sure you must have resolved already if you're considering the switch, but does your style of photography warrant the ff sensor of the 5D? If so, don't hesitate, buy it DF! You can always add a battery grip at a later date

My local shop didn't have a 5d in stock today as they were waiting for stock to come in next Tuesday

My main subjects are animals and landscapes and aircraft at the moment, but I have been known to do a bit of motorsport.
The 3fps shouldn't really be a problem as I don't think I've ever needed to fill the buffer of the 20D

I was at RAF Cosford the other week and found the 17-40 wasn't wide enough on the 20d due to the multiplication factor as the exhibits were pretty tightly packed. On a FF body the 17 should be ok
I know I could get a 10-22 and solve the problems of focal length, but I'd also like spot metering which isn't offered by the 20 but as I've never had that feature on a camera I can't say if I've missed it :nuts:


As a consolation I bought a 322rc head for my tripod, and it's frapping brilliant

I may well go back next week end and buy myself an easter present
