Hi all

Recently I managed to win the landscape category of a UK wide competition at work. Very pleased. Anyway I thought I perhaps ought to print out the picture for a first and frame it up for my wall.
This led me down the route of thinking I ought to have a standard set up for any text describing the picture. Ideally I think I'd like the text on the border of the image (that comes with the frame) rather than on the actual print out but I can see this not being possible easily.

So I think I want something across the bottom of the print like:
left hand side- Date, middle - title for the image, right hand side - my name or signature.

I'd really like ideas on how to do this in say Elements and save a template for future use so I have a common look. Ideas for printing on the border or even anything else I could try appreciated. Examples welcomed.

Thanks all.

ps. the winning image was this:

Wow! What a stunning shot... Congrats!

Are you going to be making your own frame (parts from Hobbycraft or something) with a thick card border? I was just wondering if iron-on transfers might work...

most software have the ability to print titles and date anlong with the image.

i know lightroom and cs5 do, but there must be cheaper options that do it.

Cheers Steve

Is this the type of pic that you are after?

This is just increase canvas size and then type layers added and a brush made from your signature, I don't use Elements but I'm pretty sure that you could do all of this in Elements

And here's what it looks like framed, cracking pic Dorset Dude

Blimey! That looks good Joan! Something like that seems about perfect. Thanks.

Ready for more questions?! ;)

As I am printing on A4, by adding the border round I am effectively reducing the size of the actual picture. I am thinking if I want to keep the picture itself large I would have to order a specialised print online with my added border and text like you have shown?

How would I go about making a brush from my signature? I dont have a tablet but I do have a scanner, perhaps I could sign a sheet of paper and scan it in? Although I like what you've done with "dorset dude" there, how did you do that?

Lastly how did you do the Black frame effect complete with diagonal joins in the corner? :D

And thanks to Chris and Joan for the compliments, appreciate it :)

Here's the link to the frame bit, after you have tried it a few times you will find it quite easy and may be able to include a few work arounds too.

I'll put up the other bits that you have asked about later.

Thanks Joan think that Kelby stuff should be do-able in Elements. Look forward to your other tips/bits.

Lovely image Keith, I know there was somebody on here a while back who was doing scripts for people, one of them was for the frame with shooting info etc, but I cannot remember who it was sorrry. Not sure if you are able to take a script as such and adapt it each time to suit the picture before running it

Here's how to do the brush signature, open up the scan of your signature, it doesn't have to be massive.

select just the area that includes the signature, then go to edit - define brush preset, name the brush and it should be available in your brushes.

As always there are a few ways to do this but try this for a start.

Here's the canvas size bits
Say your print size is 20x13,

Dorsetdude_size.jpg

to increase the canvas size go to Image -Canvas Size and change the measurements to 24 width & 17 height then click in the centre box & OK, this will add 2" to each side of the pic.

Dorsetdude_canvas_A.jpg

then go back to Image - Canvas Size and change the height measurement to 18 and click in the top centre box this will add an additional inch to the base.

Then just add your type and brush signature and voila.....

Once again there are a few ways to do this type of thing but this will give you a starting point....enjoy

Thanks Joan thats great. I have had a thought that if I had the increased canvas size on a separate layer I could possibly add bevel or drop shadow effects to the layer and simulate a cardboard mounts bevel edge. I shall have play.

Also once Ive done all this I then need to resize the image down again to fit in a standard frame size for mounting. Probably A4 to maximise the print area I have.
