Hi Guys,

Just joined the forum so hoping that someone can help. A friend of mine has offered to model for me as she has always wanted some good photo's taken but didn't feel comfortable going to a professional photographer that she did not know. The photo's will probably be taked in the house.

I'm still learning after aquiring a second hand Canon 300D at Christmas and I'm wanting to know if anyone has any tips / suggestions for this type of photography from how to make the model feel at ease and how to get some stunning photo's.

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated

Hi Creed, its all about the light, look at the light coming in from windows etc + the direction of it etc. You do not have to have all of the kit to to do good portraits. Have a practice using fill in flash etc. Get together & have fun trying things out!

Good luck

John

thanks for the advice, forgot to add I have the stock lens (18 - 55 I think) and a 55-200 lens as well as the battery grip and a monopod. I was thinking for indoors that it my be best using the smaller lens.

Hi, welcome to TP. As Johnb said - it's all about the light, if you haven't got any reflectors, have a 'Blue Peter' moment :D and make some out of white card or card covered in scrunched up foil just to push some light back in where there might be dark shadows, might need an extra pair of hands for that or something to prop them up against.;)

Try to chat to your model as much as possible and lots of encouragement. Really try to stay relaxed and have a good time, and experiment.:) I'm not an expert but I do know that if the model feels relaxed and at ease then the pictures will look so much better!!

Get your friend to look through some magazines, websites, etc. and find some shots she likes and doesn't like. This will give you a good idea of where to start with for the lighting and poses and also what to avoid.

What kind of pictures are you planning, full length? portraits?
Environmental? glamour? beauty?
Natural light? flash?
Theres so many elements to be considered.... is there any area in particular you want to address?

I know its personnal preference but since I am leaning towards the idea of natural light and not using the flash would you suggest B&W or colour.. also as I'm still new to the camera can you set the camera to take the photo in B&W or is it best to shoot in colour then convert to B&W afterwards?

Really apprecaite all the feedback so far

In reply to inaglo I'm planning on using natural light and mainly beauty shots with a few portraits.. Possibly moving towards some shots in langerie if we both feel comfortable enough.

Hi Creed,
You may find this thread clicky useful for help with natural light, CJ is an expert on it.

You can get B&W straight out of the camera but its advisable to work with colour and have the option to alter it later in PS or whatever software you will use to process.

Thanks for the link to the post, I have already had a good read through that thread and its seems very usefull, although I have to admit as a beginner I don't completely understand it all.

I guess I'm going to have to experiment and see what the results are and if my friend agrees possibly post some of the photo's to gain some feedback and if necessary arrange another shoot.

I think a dummy run is a good way to go.
For a start it would give you both a chance to get comfortable with the situation,
Youll find out some of what works and what doesnt and have the time to come up with solutions to any problems you may encounter.
Then you'll get honest feedback when you post here and have better informed idea of what youre trying to achieve when you go for the real thing.

EDIT: Also, try typing 'Portrait Shoot' into the search box, theres some useful threads in the archives. hth.

yeah that does help, although some of them I'll have to view from home as are not suitable for work.

Need to do some serious research on the forum before the shoot as well, really like the idea of my friend having a look and telling me what sort of photo's she likes. Although its practice for me its also because she wants the photo's so she has to like them as well.
