I just got a Nikon D40 which is my first proper DSLR and it is taking some getting used to, however I am "slowly" picking it up.

Am off to the RIAT Air Show in Fairford this weekend and wondered if anyone could give me some tips for aircraft photo's.

If you could please give your tips as if your speaking to a complete amateur, because...well...because you are :p

My only tip (and not one to do with photography) is make sure you have a ticket if you go on Saturday; no tickets on the day.

lol thanks guys, I have tickets, but I was thinking more tips on photography :D

You'll need a mixture of lenses really, I use a 500mm and also a selection taken fron 10-17 fisheye zoom, 17-40, 85, 100, 135, 200, 300, so I go well prepared, the main tip I would give is to practise yor panning technique, it's all important for fast moveing jets

Take your own food:thumbs:;)

Slow shutter speed for prop jobs and helos, as fast as you like for jets unless ground, trees or buildings in view in which case slow shutter for background blur.

Remember to keep panning after you squeeze the shutter release.

Remember to adjust exposure for the amount of light from the sky otherwise you will get nice black silhouettes

Hi dmccabe,

I had the same questions myself recently and went through a lot of old threads and pulled out the tips and advice from other members, so this may help you linky
