On 7th Sept I have a photographers pass for an outdoor proms event in Preston where Katherine Jenkins and Jose Carreras will be performing. Unfortunately the pass doesn’t give me backstage or media pit access, I will just be out in the crowd which is an unreserved standing area so getting a good position could prove difficult. I’m expecting a setup something along the lines of a music festival but slightly more refined as it is opera music so hopefully people sat on picnic blankets sipping pimms.

Until I turn up I have no idea how close to the stage I’ll be able to get so I’m hoping my 70-200mm f2.8 will be long enough and I also have a 135 f2 and 85 f1.4 if I can get closer and low light is an issue. I have an SB900 I could use but no idea how practical or acceptable that would be.

Anyone have any experience of shooting events like this and able to pass on any tips?

I wouldn't use flash. Usually if needed for gigs you time you're shutter to the lights sequence.

We have been to various outdoor music events, and although they may seem refined and well behaved, the crowds will go pretty mad when two top artists take the stage, so you had better sharpen up your elbows and polish the Doc Martens, if you want a good spot.
You have the glass for the event, and natural light always looks better.
You could even try bumping the ISO up to 3200 or 6400 and taking some character portraits of Carreras whilst he is singing, although the lovely Catherine Jenkins may need a more restrained approach.

Whatever you do, make sure you use live ammunition when you shoot them.

An event that takes place only every twenty years and these are the most interesting acts they could come up with?

I live near the park so I'll have to listen to that dross whether I like it or not.

You miserable barsteward Mike. Opera music might not be your cup of tea, it's not mine either but you have to admit they are bloody good at what they do. They are both 2 huge names in the music industry. Just because it's not pop music from Radio One doesn't mean it's not good.

I'm looking forward to it even if it's on completely the opposite end of the scale of the music I'd listen to. The last gig I went to was Iron Maiden.

Wow!
Unbelievable!
I would really like to know who you rate as good, if Catherine Jenkins and Jose Carreras are "dross".

Probably the crankies.

With all due respect, the word I used was "interesting" ;)

I'm not saying they're not good at what they do but for a festival that occurs only every twenty years why not have something more original?

The only advice I can give is post the Katherine Jenkins photos on here!

Not that fussed about starting a "my dad's better than your dad" debate ;)

The point I'm making is that these people are famous (for a reason, no doubt) and almost certainly do gigs all over the place most weeks, they just happen to be in Preston this week. It's not special or relevant to Preston Guild, that only takes place every twenty years.

My tastes aren't really catered for and I don't expect them to be, I'm sure if I mentioned some acts no-one would show up. That's not the point. The point is, you could probably go and see either of those people perform somewhere in the UK at least once or twice a year.

They have organised another do where Human League are playing... much more like it, but I don't see posters for that all over town.

What would you like to see as being original? Preston has never seen anything like this before so in my eyes it will be very original.

There's lots of other things they could do with the money they've spent booking this acts where they didn't need to use big name acts.

Some guys I know used to run the Jazzin' the Park festival a few years ago... that would be welcome. Another day they could have a folk gig, a rock gig, a reggae gig and electronic music gig. Lots of things that represent the diverse community. I'm not saying don't have classical music but why spend so much on so little?

They could even make it a charity affair and get well-known acts to play for free.

Good luck with that one.

Very few, if any, well known acts would do it for free unless they got something out of it, e.g. it was a well publicised event of national interest etc where they would be getting the publicity. One small town which most people couldn't point to on a map is hardly up there.

Don't know what you could call original either. Jazz, Pop, Reggae has all been done so is hardly original. The fact that you can name them means that they aren't original.

I don't really know what to say about the first comment, so here we go on the rest of it.
Both the artists concerned are WORLD FAMOUS and they are now playing in Preston. The only thing that I know Preston to be famous for was Tom Finney, and I doubt if they could get him to perform because he is 90.
This is a benefit to Preston and the people of Preston, because it is a special occasion, and special occasions demand special acts.

A smug comment that can only come from someone in the SE :bang:

To quote the Preston Guild website

"Preston Proms in the Park will attract 10,000 people and is expected to be a sell out as it will be a unique opportunity to see these two international classical stars perform together."

And to quote Katherine Jenkins herself

“It's the first time we've performed together on stage and I cannot wait. I hope the fans are as excited as I am!"

They've never performed together on stage before so if that's not original then I don't know what is.
