Hi guys

I'm after some advice from the pros. I have the Canon 550d with 18-55mm lens as well as the Canon 50mm f1.8. I should hopefully launch my accessories website in about 3 weeks and I will be the on taking the photos. It will be mostly product photography and portrait style pictures. I'm just after any tips from the pros. I have been playing around with my camera for a good few months, but haven't bought a great deal of accessories. Any advice on what else I should get?

Thanks so much in advance!

The lenses you have should be fine. Use the 50mm where you can for its quality and depth of field but you'll probably need the kit lens for close-ups. It focuses a lot closer than the 50mm will. Lights and reflectors are what you need most for product photography. Ideal kit is going to be off-camera flash, light stands, umbrellas, reflectors etc but might be pricey... There's no reason you can't use a couple of desk lamps or window light as your light source or cobble together something from things you might have around the house.

Take a look at these home made light boxes for starters:

Might be worth getting/making a lightbox if you're after clean backgrounds etc

Thanks so much for all the advice :) Hopefully, I will be able to purchase the accesories you mentioned in the near future. I have in fact made a light box, just need to fit lights on it permanently. I'm guessing 4 lights from each corner? Yes I've just answered my own question, just seen the link, thanks Matt. Light source coming from one side is not doing the trick as I'm not keen on the shadows.

@David & Chris, yes I want all the products on a white clean background. It's hats and other hair accessories for infants and toddlers, some quite big, like sun hats and some small like headbands.

I'll be working on these in the next few days, I'll see if I can upload them for you to critique!
