Hii

I will be lucky enough to spend a few days in Budapest at the end of May. Has anyone been before or can anyone suggest some different areas or must photograph places

All hints and tips welcomed ...

I have googled and searched on flickr, so now looking for some real first hand experiences :)

Lucky you, I went a few years ago and remember that Pest, the part up on the hill with its castle and older features was far more photogenic than lower part Buda which is more modern and better suited for street style photography. but I can recommend you a decent bar which is probably why I didnt take may photos. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowU...37706-Amigo_Bar-Budapest_Central_Hungary.html
Have a great time.,

I've been twice. Once about 25 years ago and again last summer.

25 years ago you could wander around all the sights with barely a soul about, where as now places like Parliament Square, Fisherman Bastion, are very busy with literally swarms of people. My advice for photography would be to get up early and beat the crowds, although if you are off season that may help.

It is still a lovely city though, and excellent value for accommodation, food and drink.

A look at some of the Flickr groups should give you some inspiration. There are also a couple of threads on here in the Places and Locations part of the forum.

The Shoes on the Danube and also the Terror House are interesting and moving places if you are interested in recent Hungarian history.

Enjoy your trip.

Thank you both for your imformative replies and taking the time to respond

I was there in October, a lovely city indeed :) For me it felt like a quiet city, I was expecting Prague levels of tourists but that wasn't the case for the better. The Fisherman's bastion etc got busy but not ridiculous. Definitely nice and quiet up there at sunset/nighttime. We went in October however so probably went at a quieter time of year.

Just to avoid any confusion, the Buda side is the one with the castle etc, and Pest is the more modern bit on the flatter side.

Photography wise, I'd definitely recommend looking in the big churches, St Nicolas and St Stephens for sure. The opera house tour was much more interesting than I thought and a beautiful building to boot. Margaret Island was nice but not necessarily must see, they have pedal carts for hire which are a fun way to see the island :)

For eating, I would have a look at the New York Palace too, a bit out of the way but on the tour bus routes. Excellent food at reasonable-ish prices in a very fancy setting. Don't worry about getting dressed up though, it was full of tourists in jeans and tshirts when we went

If you haven't already I would recommend reading a little of history of the city before going, especially the 20th Century stuff :)

I went there in 2008 in December and found it a lovely city. Very nice old buildings. The chain bridge is beautiful at night. Buda Castle looks nice from the other side of the river. The Fisherman's Bastion has good views across the river. Unusual design though imho, it seems a bit 'Disney'. ;) Good views from the Citidella looking over the river too. The Funicular is worth a trip. I love Funiculars though. The Parliament is a stunning view from the other side of the river. I think they were renovating it when I went, so didn't get the whole view. :( Heroes Square at the entrance to the park is impressive. When I was there there were Trams old and new.

Lots of Spa's to chill out, though I didn't realise such a big thing when I went, so didn't try one out. The is a big one in the park.

It is one of the places I'm thinking of visiting again, but to get a different perspective in the Summer.

Hope you have a good time, and let us know how you get on. :)

Hello Tezz:)!

I went to Budapest in 2010 for a course. I stayed on the Buda (castle area) side. The castle area is marvellous - it's like going back in time. Also, as you're high up, there are stunning views of the Danube. The National Art Gallery is near the castle; worth a look and a very nice café. The Pest side is more shopping and Baroque sort-of-thing - not so much my cup of tea, but I 'did' it! The bridges are appealing.

Some Hungarian friends took me to Lake Balaton; it's like a huge inland sea. It's about 1 and a half hours by car; there are trains from Budapest.

Have a great trip!
