Greetings all,

I wonder if any of the more experienced members in here could offer advice on creating a decent border for pictures during PP?:help:

What I tend to do (in elements) is: resize->canvas, then choose percent then black fill, then relative 2% enlarge. I then repeat but choose 4 or 5% and white as the fill colour. Looks ok but not fantastic.

Would like to hear of any other methods people use to apply borders.

Also, should I apply the border to the full size image prior to resizing or after? Or doesnt it really matter?

Heres' hoping.

Thanks

One trick is to use the crop tool.
Click the crop tool icon then clear, drag out any crop, let go then drag the crop outside the image, when you hit return it'll add a border with the background colour.
Another way is to add a new layer fill with say white, add a layer mask to show the centre of the image through and then add a filter effect on the border mask.

Here's another couple....

With your pic open go to image-canvas size - increase width & height to whatever width of border that you want, pick your colour in the canvas extension box at the bottom.

Or open layer styles by double clicking on your layer, click on stroke, put position to inside, increase the size of your stroke to suit, click in the colour box for whatever colour you want, this second method actually puts the border on the inside of your pic so may only be suitable for some pics, but handy to know.

OOOPS, just noticed that you are using Elements, I don't know if the above are doable in Elements

thanks all

Wayne's idea is a new one to me, but I cant do layer masks directly in Elements 7, but may be able to "cheat" it.

Joan, yes those options are in elements.

How about a border with rounded internal corners? How might one do that?

Thanks

Open layer styles by double clicking on your layer, click on stroke, put position to outside, increase the size of your stroke to suit, click in the colour box for whatever colour you want, but you would need to increase the size of your canvas to be able to see it, play around with the stroke layer style box to see what it can do.

It depends on what you will be doing with the pics to give you more options for rounded corner borders as there are many, many ways to "skin the proverbial".

So... have you tried any of the suggestions? Did they work for you?
