As the motorsport season is almost on us I thought I'd put this guide together I've based it on Brands Hatch but it should be the same what ever race circuit you go to, you'll have to make a few adjustments but I hope it helps.

Interesting that you shoot shutter priority. I usually shoot aperture if I'm looking to freeze the frame. By setting it at it's widest it will always give you the fastest shutter speed possible which is better than setting a shuutter speed too fast for the light and under-exposing (I soon learnt from that mistake).

My tips, wrap up warm, and make sure your waterproofs are what they should be. Don't forget grass roots motorsport either. Cheaper entry, better access and you might make some freinds and a couple of quid along the way.
 
Nice article, I will try this when I'm down Brands for the BSB in April.

I'm with daveuk on this, shutter priority for me. In fact now I only ever use shutter priority and manual mode I've abandoned Aperture priority altogether.
 
Wow! Nice piece! It must have taken a while. I am not likely to be there in the forseeable but some nice pointers for trackside shooting.

Well done on a great effort!
 
Interesting topic Davey.
I've only been to BH once, so if I go again (this time with a camera), that should come in useful.
BTW, I also only use aperture priority for all my motorsport shots. I know people say use Sutter priority, but AP makes more sense to me. In fact, I can't ever remember using SP on this camera.

As for shutter priority over aperture priority it's horses for coarses what works for you has got to be a good thing.

Just passing on what little info I have in the hope of helping others.

I'm going to try and go to Thruxton a few times this year so I'll try and do something like this very much towards the end of the year.
 
Freaky, been trying to find info on motorsport photography techniques.

Can i make a suggestion? How about a small map of Brands with notes on mentioning the corners you talk about? Might help people with no prior knowledge?
 
Excellent write up, I just wish I'd had something like this a few years ago :p

Try to stand on the apex of Druids bend and look to your left the tree will be in your way but that’s nothing to worry about,

It acts as an image stabiliser to prevent camera blur for longer focal lengths at shorter shutter speeds. More and more useful the bigger and heavier the lens - prevents neck ache and also acts as a useful weapon.
 
Yes, but a tripod isn't as convenient. Tripods - great for long exposures but a monopod is more convenient at a race circuit or sporting event where you want a sharp image at 1/60th second but with a 300mm focal length
