Hi everyone,

Well I'm new to photography and am trying different subjects, I thought I give cars a go as I'm a mechanic an love my cars.
I was hoping of you guys and girls could give me tips and help on taking photos of cars ie positioning, camera settings, etc tips would be great.
I'm going to clean my car this weekend and take some photos.
I've got a Nikon d3100 with 18-55 mm lens also have a tripod.

Thanks
Marco

Welcome to the forum  you'll get a better response in one of the talk sections so I've suggest this be moved

As to positioning try and get low angles and all of the car in frame  thats the best advice that I can give

^^^^ what he said, also close up shots can wotk if your going for the arty vibe, taking pics of your stance can also be good for showing depth of field, if you have stance that Is

Best advice when starting out is to have a look at other automotive photographers and copy their angles/compositions. The transport section here & flickr are good places to start :)
Then over time you'll start to develop your own ideas.

Getting down low or up high works pretty well. I have lied down in the snow and climbed empty container trailers to get the right angle.

First off, a clean car is a good place to start, so you sound like you've got that covered!

My biggest tip is to post images up here for feedback/critique and to take inboard suggestions!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
Hopefully it will be sunny this weekend and I shall e taking some pics an posting then up on here for some feedback.

Where/how/what backgrounds should I look for, I've seen some pics by other photographers and some of the back ground on them look stunning. Any ideas?

I've been doing car photography a while and the main tips from me are:

Try as many different angles as possible.
Profile shots always work well on cars
Use a polarisor to remove glare and refelections on the lights and windscreen
Front 3/4 shots are the classic magsine shots and work well on all cars
and
Use a mini tripod for low angle shots which suit most cars

Backgrounds: almost all of mine are city/residential but pretty much any where will do

Good luck
