Hi everyone my name is Rachel from Derbyshire and I joined here as I want to try and lean Photography as this is a huge hobby of my dads and I want to connect with him. It's a secret mission of mine ha where I want to learn all I can and be able to take nice photos then surprise him with it all. I really have no idea where to start though I am desperate for some help and advice if possible from anyone here. I hope you can help me. Thanks, Rachel xx

Welcome to the forum Rachel, that`s a great idea and i`m sure he`ll be well chuffed when he finds out. First I suppose is do you have a camera to start off with and are you talking any specific genre or anything and everything? If you do have a camera do you have a basic understanding of using it? If so then the best thing to do is take a couple of shots and post them up for advice.

Hi thanks for replying! Ok so he takes all sorts of photos, he like landscapes but then just really random ones he like lighting I know that so I need to learn about that! I don;'t have a camera however I have a Sony phone that has the Sony Cybershot lens in it and takes fab quality photos and I wondered is that good enough or will I need to invest in an actual camera and if so which one please? Thanks xx

Your phone should do you nicely to start with, just mix in some imagination, and if you are stuck for that then have a look in this thread where it might give you some ideas to try out. Like I say though once you have taken a couple of images it would be best to post them up so others can guide you through anything you may need to do to improve on them.

Can I try to break down what you are saying.....

Photography is not necessarily all about the camera and how to use it.

The reason I say that is, one aspect of engagement with another photographer (related or not) is all about the pictures. If you are content with the phone pictures, have you sat down with your dad and chatted about the joy of photography and the pictures you have been taking.

Having said that, if you feel that part of that engagement with him is about sharing the camera usage experience.....then what camera does he have? I am not saying you need to buy the exact same camera but perhaps a same make but different model! In other words as you teach yourself how to get the best out of it......what better way to engage with him than to show & share how you are doing and learn from him as you improve.

Just some thoughts.....

Hi thanks I know you are right but trust me I know my dad he has no patience and I would prefer to learn it my way in secret and then to show him and talk about it to him to show that I know what I am doing and talking about. I know this is a steep learning curve for me but I am willing to put in the effort to do this xx

Ah! I see.

Can I suggest you start a Flickr account to upload your pictures to then share here at TP to get some constructive criticism...............a part of learning to get such feedback and then see if you are able to put suggestions into practice. I would think that your camera would be fine for landscape/scenic views, townscapes, flowers/gardens....anything but small birds and the other such wildlife.

Let the TP folk give you some feedback and take small steps, especially before you spend any money on a camera ~ afteral it is the user that takes the pictures not the camera. Note ~ yes, cameras that give more finite control over the settings used can give you a new/different view of the world around you but it all starts by using the camera(phone) that you have and learning & pushing yourself to get the very best photographs you can with it. That will give you a guide as to what its limitations are and whether spending money on non phone camera will be a good next step to take?

All, the best with your photographic journey :)

Hello everyone. I'm a moderator of a bodybuilding forum.

I have created an account here just to inform you that Rachel B is a troll, in case you did not already figure it out.

I performed a reverse image search of her avatar, and when I did it revealed she made accounts on several forums yesterday. Flyfishing, photography, and bodybuilding (the forum I moderate). So apparently her father is a flyfishing bodybuilding photographer... and these are HUGE hobbies for him. And she's trying to connect with him on all these things, coincidentally all on the same day she made these forum accounts.

When I inquired about it, she immediately removed her avatar. Then she changed her avatar on the photography and fly-fishing forums, so she could avoid the reverse image search.

I can provide links if someone really wants, but it's unlikely I'll log in again unless someone tags me requesting more information.

Well I did wonder Chris but hey i`m a changed man and gave her the benefit of the doubt :)
I've been watching her, I'm more sceptical than you ...
I need to be ;)

A hot looking troll you`d have to say :naughty:
There is a fair chance that's not really her, that's how "they" suck people in ;)

Send0 has a nice looking pussy as his/her avatar...

What also happens is, when people start replying, in the thread, they get increasingly explicate PM's, thankfully it rarely happens, and I've no reason to suspect that it happened in this case..
The things we do to protect our members eh?
(although some might call me a spoil sport :D )

I do not need protecting Chris, probably quite the opposite if I get explicit pm`s :naughty:

Mankini shot incoming, Rich!!!

I don't know if there was other evidence but Send0 claimed on Sunday to have done a reverse image search on an avatar posted on Saturday, and turned up other examples of that avatar posted that same day. It may have elements of truth (that is, the OP is a troll) but I call de armento cacas on that, sorry. Have you aver tried google image search for an avatar? And of an image posted same day? Not sure what the game is here.

We know she is a troll, no need to worry yourself, it's our job to flush them out.
The way we do it is known to staff, only, we don't tell everyone our tricks, or they will avoid them.
