Hi there

I have been into timelapse video for a while now and have being using a camcorder most of the time. But recently i have noticed you can get a lot better results using a DSLR.

So i have managed to pick up a DSLR camera, and have been attempting some timelapse photgraphy.

But my question is if i wanted to get a timelapse of a motorway at night to catch the car lights etc..

obviously i would have to use a long shutter time to get enough light in as it would be night time, say 8 - 10 secs.

But if i wanted a smooth timelapse i would have to take a picture every say 5 - 7 secs.

How would this be possible with the shutter speed being higher than the interval time? so i it *** try to take another picture while the previous picture is still in the process of being taken..

Hope you understand and can help.

Thanks

No expert but I guess you just have to keep the shutter speed the same as your interval time. Take a photo every 7 secs with a 7 sec shutter and boost the iso if it's too dark. Should be fine though, results should be cool if you get it right. I'm sure someone else can help more than me. :)

hi

thanks for the quick reply.

Yeh ive thought about that, but i have seen really smooth nightime timelaps that must of been shot another way.

Any other ideas..

You would have to have a faster shutter speed to avoid it becoming just a traffic trail. So you will have to use a high iso and wide aperture to get as fast as possible. You will need to get it in the fraction of a second range not, several seconds. Bear in mind that if it is for video you will be pixel binning so the noise that you get from the high iso will be negated in the final product.

ahhh, thanks a lot.

i will give it ago,

yeah the final product would be a video.

but i guess its mostly just experimenting..
