Hello all. Long time landscape photographer, here for the first time.

It's time to replace my ageing but beloved EOS 6d mk1 as the rear buttons are starting fail.

I shoot landscapes only and generally in good light up until sunset. I have a collection of L series glass and so want to stick with Canon.

I also have a limited budget so looking at the sub £800 used market.

The obvious choice(s) seem to be the 6d MK2 or the 5d MK4. Either would do all I need and fit my budget. The 6d just having the edge with the articulated screen.

That said, I have no experience or real knowledge of the mirrorless range. Am I missing a trick by sticking to a dSLR? I don't do video, I don't need a fast burst rate. I generally spot focus and tweak manually. I'm struggling to find a reason to switch to mirrorless but wanted some advice from others who have done to sense check my decision.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks all.

Hi and welcome to TP

As photographers we all have our genre and kit preferences so FWIW

In your shoes I would consider, as you mentioned, the 6D2 or the 5D4.....why, well when I had my 5D3 I was more than happy with it's lovely easily post processable files.

But in 2016 I switched to mFT kit for its lighter weight and performance to aid my genre including wildlife and birds in flight. Plus, mFT is no slouch in any genre including IMO landscapes.

Yes, when venturing into ISO above 1600 the files need greater post processing attention but the current crop of software especially in regard to noise reduction handling are excellent.

Should you decide to go mirrorless full frame I read that the Canon R series are good, which that IIRC an adapter you can use your current lens line up.

Best of luck with your decision and no doubt other TPers will chip in in due course:)

Personally I think the sensor on the 5d4 is wonderful.

If you could stretch to it, an EOS R with mount adapter is another option - very similar sensor, better AF and it also opens up the RF mount for the future. But I have a 5d4 and it’s an excellent camera.

If you don't need improved AF and DR, how about another 6D and an extra lens? I used to love my 6D, only swapped to Fuji because I needed lighter weight / smaller kit when out with the kids. IQ was amazing.

If not, 5D Mk 4!
I guess I just want something that feel new to me, even if it's old.

R6 ii is the logical progression and r5 would be an upgrade for more resolution

You can also stick ef glass on adapter to sony thus getting access to much better e mount ecosystem

Waaaayyyy out of my £800 budget!

The EOS R fits perfectly. Got the same sensor as the 5D IV and the articulating screen but opens the door to both adapt your EF lenses but also use new RF lenses. Fits the £800 budget too: https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/canon-eos-r

The 6Dmkii has a slightly worse sensor when it comes to high iso and shadow recovery compared to the original. The 5Dmkiv sensor has more megapixels but more importantly is less noisy (sensor) plus the weather sealing of the body is better. Have you looked at the R8 as you might be able to pick one secondhand for close to your budget.
