A little while ago some to rag purchased a couple of 450d's & a couple of
Sony camcorders from my fathers catalogue.

Well this morning he logged onto Ebay & noticed that his account had been
hacked & he was the winning bidder to the tune of £36k worth of top end
mobile phones.

He sent as many emails as he could to the sellers (Ebay has a daily limit).

He has alerted Ebay & has a few more emails to send & is now thinking of
calling it a day.

Just a 'heads up' to you all.

Ouch :( That sucks. Thanks for the tip off though.

I do not see the connection either. If the guy bought from your father, that would not allow him access to your father's ebay account password.

Yeah, now I read this again. It doesn't make sense. Who logged into Ebay? Your father or the toe rag? Who's account had been hacked? The toe rag's or your fathers? If your father's, then what does that have to do with the toe rag who bought a couple of cameras from your dad?

I won't be changing my passwords on the basis of this post, as it makes no sense at all - I don't see the link?

Usually caused by one of the following:

  • Weak/insecure passwords on eBay, PayPal, or your email account. So often people forget the last one and then get hacked by a simple password reset.
  • Logging in from public computers. How can you be sure they're secure? Even if they are secure, do you remember to log out?
  • Viruses/Trojans. Get a decent AntiVirus package and keep it up to date. There are no excuses for this given that some of the best are free.
  • Bad luck. It happens - sometimes a hacker just gets lucky.
Telling everyone else to reset their passwords isn't the point. Making sure your account doesn't get hacked again (or preventing it from happening in the first place) is.

No problem/

Why was he a toe-rag?

Indeed. What has someone buying something got to do with your ebay account being compromised?

Confused

For the confused...................

My father had a couple of grands worth a goods purchased from his catalogue
by someone who somehow obtained his details & made a purchase online.

He has also had his Ebay account hacked & someone using his Ebay details
bid & won several thousands of pounds worth of mobile phones.

If they can hack his account then surely they can hack yours or mine.

Like i said 'just a heads up'.

I agree, but this thread may prompt others into checking their own security etc.

I'm still confused. Someone got your father's eBay username and password and bought stuff from your father's catalogue?

You serious or just being silly

I'll take a guess at what was meant.

Well, there's two options:

a) His father has a catalogue and someone bought stuff from it.

b) His father had an account with one of the catalogue stores (e.g. Argos) and that got hacked and someone then bought stuff.

I'm going with option b. So, either his Father's email got hacked or a trojan (key logger) got in. At this point, I'd be suggesting his Father changes all his passwords.

Oh, your FATHER got his account hacked. That makes more sense!

Why did I feel constipated when I read this thread ?

Sorry guys, it was 00.34 when i posted this thread & i didnt word it very
well :shake:

Yes, my fathers Great Universal catalogue account had camera equipment
ordered without his knowledge.

Also, his Ebay account was accessed & £36k worth of mobile phones had
been won using his details.

His catalogue & Ebay login details are different.

Hope that makes more sense

I would suggest your Father checks the security on his PC. In particular run a full virus scan on the machine, and run something like Sysinternals Rootkit Revealer. I would also urge anyone your Father contacts via e-mail to do the same.

I still don't know what the catalogue has do with with changing Ebay and Paypal passwords, I don't see the link. To me they seem like unconnected incidents, and if its nothing to do with the Ebay "hack" I don't know why you mentioned it, and if it IS to do with the Ebay "hack" the link between the two still elludes me?!

Sounds to me like his computer has been compromised and someone has got the usernames and passwords for everything he uses, including the catalogue account, his eBay account and his paypal account.

It's also entirely likely that he used the same credentials for each site, so only one set needed to be gathered.

I understand what you're talking about now, but I fail to see why you're giving the rest of the world a heads up on hackers. They've been around since before the inception of the internet and most of us have secure passwords, secure PC's, and common sense.

Just a reminder i guess as some people havent checked/updated their
systems often enough & take it for granted that they are safe.

My father has been an Ebay member for over 7yrs & has never had a problem.

First problem he does get & its to the tune of £36k worth of mobile phones.
