In Feb its option time on my car, i currently drive an MG TF (hence the user name).

Now i like it but is it time for a change?? I'm looking for recommendations from forum users.

I'm 27 with a partner who has a 'family car' so no major need to be practical, and we don't have any kids.......yet. The TF is a soft top which i love but i have been looking at tin tops again. I don't do huge amounts of long journeys so it does not have to be a motorway muncher either.

So you have prob gathered that i'm looking for something sporty, fun, reasonably quick and not that practical. A typical weekend car!!

Can anyone advise??..........thanks

P.S. I have been looking at the Mini Cooper, BMW Z4 and Honda Civic R already

Sorry, bald as a badger on the chest area :lol:

Basic dynamics - as a driving car here, where there are no other considerations, in this 3-some, the Z4 wins easily

As a 'fun' car and occasionally practical car, the mini wins

If you like other people &/or want to go shopping for groceries, the Honda

I do have a small soft spot for the z4 in M coupe guise but the I couldn't have an ordinary one. I mean any car that must weigh at least a ton and a half that got beaten that badly by the ugly stick can't really be any good. ;)

If I was going to get another rag top it would probably be another S2kip, still a good compromise of fast mid engined flickability and lots of comfy bits for that daily use.

I do still want to strip one as track toy but that's another thread all together. :lol:

Seriously, any proper driver prefers rear wheel drive, so in this 3-some, it's a no-brainer

Oh and Joe-T, never met her, never will, but I like her

(especially if 'she' is a girl! :lol::lol::lol:)
 
Ahh budget. I paid 14k for for my TF when i got it, i have to be strict and go no more than that. I saw a nice 53 Z4 2.2 for 12k, has not got the mileage on the advert though!
 
I had a Z4 before my current 3 series (had to get "sensible" for work). Most fun EVER!!!

Rear wheel drive, the "yowl" of a high reving straight six, roof down on a summers day = PERFECTION!!!

One option you definately NEED though as the heated seats. That way you've got roof down motoring all year round (had my roof down in -7 degrees last year. No problemo!).

Oh, J-T enjoy youth while you can - a long line of 'daft' cars (as yes all where RWD) led me to a family situation and more sensible cars

At college I was known as 'Hambo' (Rambo was the film(s) of the time, and I had a similar physique too [then!!!]) for a skill with the handbrake

Last 2 cars have been powerful Lexus models, and even when you turn off the traction control, it's still there really trying to spoil your fun

NOTE - last few were all big 'family' cars, so while you're young - GO DAFT :lol::lol::lol:

My next chance is in another 8 years when my youngest has flown the coop - so if I got a Z4 (whatever) I'd be one of those middle-aged t**ts youngsters (like me once) hate so much :D
 
Hey i have nothing against the old gits buying fun, fast cars. If it was not for them we would not be able to by them second had in such good condition!!
 
Have you considered a Clio 182? I've got a Phase 1 172 and I can't fault it. Bags of fun, and I've not come across anything that I couldn't get past if needed.
 
Car is within budget but the insurance could prove messy!! Had a quick online quote and its double that of the Z4.
 
S2000 is the one to go for ;) Ring a few specialist insurance companies, you should get it down quite a bit.
 
If your a fan of RWD cars that handle like a rwd car avoid standard S2000's . Awful understeeryness.

I'd vote for a imported s15 Silvia!

That's impressive, but what sort of special offer did Sainsbury's have on to warrant such speedy driving?

And the shopping reference was not meant in a derogatory fashion, more to do with it being practical too rather than a 'drive-me-only' type car like Z4 etc. :thumbs:
 
What about a Vauxhall VX220? - About £12k, fun to drive and more of a blokes car than an elise for example.
 
Couldnt you just sell the house, wife, kids, dog etc and get one of these

Personally i'd love a new car, but i can't think of many things that are a bigger waste of money really. If it was me i'd be putting it towards a house, or going on holiday :)

Lotus Elise is the ultimate in terms of fun, looks and performance. I would not want anything else on a sunny day. The car is just nuts, especcially in bright orange :love: :thumbs:

CTR's both EP3's (as per Ross' post or the newer FN2 are huge fun and practical too) but if you want a weekend only, then Honda's S2K has to rate as does an Elise or VX220. Anything elese is likely to be a little soft around the edges and offer someting of a compromise.
 
Put a Civic Type R K20A2 supercharged engine in an Elise and then it becomes a mans car, otherwise they're a bit ghey for my liking (ie slow).
 
Elise is a car for blousing in. Far too many polished and pampered then taken to track days only to be led round like an old donkey.

If you MUST have a lotus then is HAS to be the exige.

You clearly never been to a Lotus track day, the Elises far out number the Exiges, and the number that turn up with gaffer tape holding them together is insane.

The Elise, Exige and VX 220's are pure and simple sports cars, which look ace to boot.

My first track day I spun 4 times, and I absolutely kill my car when using it. What its for :)

Sorry I don't race away from traffic lights so 0-60 means zip to me ;) 30 to 120 is a much better measure of performance I feel, and unfortunately this is where the majority of Elises (and non-supercharged Exiges) get left standing.

A mk1 Exige on cup tyres is only 5 seconds a lap quicker round a full lap of the Nurburgring compared to a standard EP3 Type R with road tyres

In my book that doesn't really make it worth the 15k price premium. Not bad cars but I'd take a secondhand E46 CS with a manual gearbox or a 911 of some description :D[/SIZE][/FONT]
