I used to have a little action cam that took 1 frame every second (adjustable up to 10 IIRC) and automatically made the results into a video. Since it seems to have died, does anyone have any suggestions as to something relatively cheap that would do the same job. I'd need to either leave it to get on with the job for 3 hours or so or set it up to start recording at a specific time for a set period - I particularly want it to shoot sunsets.

Budget is £500 absolute max but as always, as little as possible, as much as necessary!
 
Any of the Action Cams will do Time-lapse very well Nod, The best bargain is the Dji Action 3 which is on Amazon for not much over £200.00

Thanks for the suggestion, Toonie. Only (but BIG) problem is it needing to be activated by an insecure app before it can be used.
 
I've used Mobius Actioncams in the past. A bit fiddly to set up, (and they used to have a great iPhone app, which no longer works). Changing the settings is by PC program, or editing a text settings file.
 
I've never had any problems with any Dji activations & didn't realise that the Mimo app is problematic in any way Nod

I know that the DJI app was removed from the Play store for security reasons. And I don't like compulsory apps!
 
Look at the Brinno brand. Specialise in time lapse, interchangeable lenses, own app.

As I said, John, I'm not keen on apps. It should be possible (indeed, it always was possible!) to make any adjustments to settings etc. through the device itself rather than having to use a different machine!

If that's meaning DJI you do have to initially activate it through the app then you can delete it if you want - though I have no idea what you think its going to do.
You can access settings and control it from app but everything is there on the back of camera (and front) in well laid out menus.
I'd get action4 rather than 3 which is probably about £250.
It does better in low light and more natural colours the 3 struggled with greens at times and tended to make skies look too cyan IMO

If really worried about the app activation you can use any (fairly recent) phone it doesn't have to be yours if you don't intend to do any firmware updates or use it for remote control.

Any of the GoPro range would fit the bill.
The newest version, GoPro 13 is well within your budget.
It has its own software that creates your timelapse movie

Time Lapse Video mode captures images at regular intervals, automatically stitching them into a video file. Time Lapse Photo captures the same images but saves them as individual files you can stitch together yourself. Finally, TimeWarp adds HyperSmooth image stabilization for moving time lapse and the ability to drop into regular video mode on the fly for cool ramp-up effects.

You can set up the device without the app using an inbuilt screen, albeit a small one. App just adds functionality/convenience. I have one of their cameras and found it very easy to use, which for me is essential!

If you haven't done so, take a look at the Brinno web site. Not only info about their products, but some useful web based tools.

I have nothing to do with them btw, just a very happy user.

However, a bit of research suggests (strongly, to me!) that the Brinno TLC300 IS useable as a standalone device. Since it'll be coming from the Big River, I can easily return it if I don't get on with it.
 
Mike, thanks for the GoPro suggestion too. Not sure why my mind had skipped their offerings!!!
 
I think the Brinno offerings are TL only. The GoPro option looks more inviting since it would do double duty as a snorkelling camera too.
