Can anyone help me please? I am going out in the morning to have a look around so i really need to know what i am looking for and what you think will be a good camera for me

budget = £600

Thank You Guys

Tony :)

Best advice is same as always - get into the shops and start having a play with models from different manufacturers. Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Olympus, Sony, Sigma - all do models in your price range, even with lenses in some cases. So, start picking them up and seeing which ones you like the feel of in your hand, which ones you think have the better controls/menus for you. Remember that Nikon and Canon wil have the largest range of accessories/lenses available as you build your kit, but brands like Pentax and Olympus will have similar bells and whistles at a lower price.

Once you have decided on brand, then start some online surfing for better deals than you might find in the high street, and indeed at reputable s/h dealers.

Personally, with that budget I would recommend a Nikon D80, as a Nikonian myself, but the final choice comes down to what you like. Also have a browse of the For Sale section here and see what is up for grabs, especially from those members that have just had a christmas prezzie upgrade. ;)

Good Luck! You wont regret it, even if your bank manager/credit card company learns to hate you pretty quickly.

hi Tony

remember its the system not just the body

£600 - body only or including lenses? how many lenses? IS needed? decent flash?

the canon 450d is due out to replace 400d within one month

shop around and have a good grope of the bodies available now and see what you like, but hold decision until 450d is on the market, its new features may be important to you (eg. iso 3200, video, liveview), it could spark a multibrand price war and 400d will probably drop in price.

worth waiting a month to see what happens

My mum keeps saying that it would be a waste of money buying one because i wouldn't use it and what not, i am quite "****ed" off now

Tony

Also have a look on the for sale board, there have been a few packages up there recently which would cost less and be sell onable without losing a lot if you decided photography was not for you, so your mum would be happier as well :)

Yeah, but i would much rather go to a shop because then if it brakes i can just take it back and say "FIX ME" :)

Tony :)

Have a look at the Olympus stuff thats around.

The twin lens kit E-510 gets stonking reviews and is a very able camera. The twin lenses cover the equiv 35mm range of 28-300mm and is has built in Image Stabalisation.

Cheapest i can find it is £549, and i think the £100 cashback offer is still on  making it a steal at £449 all in after cashback.

The best advice you will get is to do some research on the different prices of the prospective kits mentioned here, and hit the streets and 'have a feel' :suspect:

What fits one persons hands feels all wrong in anothers (i ended up with an Olympus E-3 for that very reason)

Most shops don't offer anything more than online stores, they don't have their own service departments or anything, so they will just send it off to Canon, Nikon, Olympus etc for repair.

I'd recommend a Canon EOS 400D, great starting camera and you would have enough left over to buy a descent lens with it.

But as everyone always says, go hold every DSLR you can get your hands on. Have a look in Jessops, they usualy have all of the current models on display (they are expensive though, so buy it somewhere else, online is the cheapest).

Thank You Mate.

I will be going to look at that Canon EOS 400D you said about, it looks really good

Quite good spec aswell

Cheers

Tony

But i think i am going to go with the Nikon D40X

Tony

Yep the other one I was going to suggest was the Nikon D40.

Not a big fan of Nikons myself but they are very good cameras and the D40 is on the same level as the EOS 400D.

However, take into account that it's more than likely that the new Canon EOS 450D is going to come out within the next month or so, keep an eye out for it.

Tony, I dont suppose this is going to help really, but, you have picked the best time of year to look around, take your time and hopefully you will be set for the summer. Regards Jim

CANON,
CANON,
CANON,
AND CANON....FIRST CHOICE ;) IN MY OPINION.
I'VE GOT A HASSELBLAD DSLR AND STILL USE MY CANON 350D FOR EVERYDAY USE, AND BY COMPARISON I STILL LOVE CANON.
COULD TRY STARTING OF WITH THE CANON 400D, LOOK 'EM UP ON EBAY, REALLY GOOD VALUE, AND YOU'D STILL HAVE MONEY LEFTOVER FOR A NICE LENS.
