Hey everyone.

First time I've posted in this section. Since 2007 I've been using my trusty Olympus E500 with standard 14-45 f3.5-5.6 lens and 70-300mm lens to reasonable effect. I've progressed as a photographer since my first baby steps in 2007/2008 up until now.

The long and short is basically this. I've felt for a while that I'm reaching the limits of my equipment with my skills, normally I would just head out and get a new lens or two but considering Olympus equipment is horribly overpriced I've decided it's time to swap up.

Most tog's I know use Nikon, the odd one uses Canon. At the moment I'm leaning towards Nikon, I've briefly used a D60, D200 and was lucky enough to have the use of my brothers D300 at Silverstone in September. I just prefer the feel, build and equipment that Nikon produce, it feels superior to similar Olympus equipment. The only area being build quality, Olympus stuff just feels a bit better built but on balance the Nikon equipment is better.

My dilemma is Canon equipment. I don't really know a great deal about Canon's products and I've never used a Canon camera before, although I have heard very good things. Price wise it seems to be similar to Nikon.

I'd like to know really what experience you guys and girls have with both Canon and Nikon cameras. The Nikon equipment I'm looking at buying is as follows:

Nikon D200 (used.)
50mm F1.8 AF lens.
55-300mm F4.5-5.6 VR DX format lens.

I'm wondering how does this equipment perform? also how does the equivalent Canon equipment perform? how is it priced in comparison to the Nikon equipment?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated :)

It is a personal choice when it comes to it - you'll prefer Nikon or Canon - obviously you've had good trials of the Nikon equipment and if you are happy with it, then go for it.

You're brother has the D300 which you borrowed, another good reason to stay with Nikon is can you "borrow" / "share" any lenses ?

If you are still having some doubts, try to "try" a Canon and Nikon body together - aim for same range though as the bodies do alter as you go up the range from the entry level ones...

With regards to Canon, the 40D is a belter od a 2nd hand buy.
They do a 50mm 1.8 - cheap, great lens, average build quality, around £75-80 new
the 55-250IS is a belter, around £140-150 new
They also do a 70-300IS which is very good and then you jump to the L series lenses.

good luck with your search...

40D does seem like a very good camera, very impressed with the specs of it. Also seems to be a bit of a steal price wise as well. What is the Nikon equivalent of the 40D out of curiosity?
