Just thought I'd share my recent experience with Tesco contents insurance.

We've had Tesco contents and building insurance for a few years now (got the Tesco Finest Policy)

Just before Christmas my 7d had an accident. Camera was on my computer desk after I'd downloaded some pictures. I hadn't noticed that the strap had tangled with a lead for a set of headphones, which was trailing on the floor. At that moment I moved by on my office chair, snagged the cable and yanked the camera off the desk! Camera then proceeded to smack into the adjacent wooden bed frame breaking the rear LCD and putting a crack in the chassis.

Called Tesco insurance, they took some details and asked if I wanted to use their repairer or my own. After a bit of research I decided to send it to Colchester Cameras rather than their generic company.

Camera was sent off, a couple of days later Colchester Cameras phoned my with an estimate - I asked for an email, which they did in a matter of minutes - this email was forwarded to Tesco. 10 minutes later I call Tesco, who agree the estimate and ask how I want to be paid, I requested a BACS payment and the money was in my account the same day!!

Camera was back in less than 2 weeks (which included Christmas) and no hassle over the insurance

Highly recommended!!

Nice to know they can be relied upon. My household insurance is due for renewal soon so I'll now be giving them some serious consideration.

Thanks for the input :)

If tesco paid up, someone has now been sacked.

I wouldn't say a word against tesco finest contents insurance.

A few years ago when my daughter was at uni, she had the door of her flat kicked in and lost her laptop. A quick phone call and an email with the original receipt and Tesco's confirmed they would cover it and send the original cost + £100 to cover inflation ( as they called it ) - And my premiums didn't go up ( because of the claim anyway )

My insurance is up next week too, i'll give them a sniff as i have never claimed but always get a feeling that if i did, it would be invalid for some reason!

Good to hear some positive experiences with Tesco's insurance.

'What Insurance?' threads seem to be quite popular on photography forums and it seems to me (anecdotally at least) that people seem to have less problems with claims from Household insurers than they do from the specialist ones. Here it was Tesco and I have personal experience with Legal and General who were fantastic as well. They settled my claim in full (all new for old) with no quibbles or questions very quickly.

My only advice is to check carefully with them and be very clear exactly what they want listed separately (usually individual items over a certain value) and exactly what cover they will provide (for example, is it covered out of the home and abroad?). I would also keep all receipts although I didn't have all of mine and they still paid out with no problem.

Obviously household insurance will be no good for pros who need the added extras like public liability and emergency equipment hire, but if that isn't needed I would always highly recommend at least looking at what your household insurers can cover.

My camera stuff is covered by my home insurance, also outside the home, but I had to notify them of any individual item over £500 (quite a lot when you have camera kit).

Good stuff, people are always quick to complain, its nice to hear praise about companies too

loads of threads on here where people ask for advice on camera insurance.. but hard to advise when not many people claim or tell us.. so thats one point for tesco.. well done and thanks for the info :)

Kippax, I thought the same - plenty of advice about what sort of insurance to get, and companies people use - but not as much about actually making a claim.
I thought others would be interested to know my experiences. Only thing I can't say at this point is how it'll effect next years premium, however as most will know the first hurdle with insurance is getting a swift payout with minimal fuss.

Except it's not Tesco, is it?

Tesco Bank act as the broker. The Tesco Finest Home Emergency cover is provided by Interpartner Assistance SA and claims are handled by HomeServe.

Homeserve! I wouldn't let them anywhere near my gas boiler so I'm certainly not having them handle home insurance.

The home emergency cover (which I don't have) is indeed provided by Homeserve

However the insurance (which is what this thread is about) is provided by Tesco Bank, underwritten by several companies.

Contents insurance, maybe, but their quotes for car insurance left a lot to be desired. My car insurance came up a month or so ago and the letter from Tesco said my premium was going to be £515 (Fully comp with 6 year's no claims). Rang round and got John Lewis (via Quidco) to do a better package for £303. When I rang Tesco to see if they'd match the quote, the person on the phone said, "No." Wouldn't even try.
Moral of the story: don't ever let a insurance company automatically renew your policy for you without checking to see if a better price can be had from some other company.

Well Tesco car insurance did the same to me, but tesco's own comparison site gave me a quote that was cheaper, and it was from tesco's, bloke on other end of phone was suprised, but said I couldn't get the new one without canceling the existing one !, then they had the cheek to ask for proof of no claims from my old company ( ) [tesco's]

"Moral of the story: don't ever let a insurance company automatically renew your policy for you without checking to see if a better price can be had from some other company" or even the same company !

Moral of the story, never let any company auto renew a contract with out checking its still good value for money even if not the cheapest.

That is funny.
