It seems "3" are trying to end the PAYG business model for them with this message

Prices are changing:
From 12/07/2022 our standard Pay As You Go rates in the UK will increase to 35p a min, 15p a text, 10p per MB of data. If you would like to disconnect your Pay As You Go services with us because of these changes, you have the right to exit. You may also be eligible for a refund of any outstanding credit. Refund requests must be made no later than 17/07/2022. For full details, go to 3.uk/2ma. Optout@My3

Now, I have two numbers in my Dual SIM phone and I have switched (awaiting it go through) one....the as at last week more expensive PAYG (Giff Gaff) to PlusNet. I mentioned this in another recent thread.

My intention then as now is to keep my other "3" number as my backup one....but this price hike is gouging even for light usage backup.

I have a small amount of credit on it so not too concerned about getting the refund they mention BUT will have to think what to do for the best going forward  :headbang:

Just annoyed that the prices of '3" have crept up and this really I think will be the straw that breaks the camels back!

Have a look at Smarty :)

It's because the price of wheat and sunflower oil has risen due to the Ukraine situation :D

We have been with giffgaff since they started, simply because their goody bags give us what we want at a good price, and very importantly, their overseas rates are cheap.
I have relatives in South Africa, Philippines, US and Australia, so that is a big plus.

Any suggestions of better are welcome of course :)

Thanks, I will have to investigate that one :)

Well, PlusNet has like most/every monthly contract various data limit offerings.

They also have unlimited calls & texts and what they call Roam like at Home.

Edit~ I will find and post a link to the roaming destinations when back at the PC.
Here is the Roam like at Home FaQs page....the list of destinations is not a fullsome as I thought I recalled

It is an EE service and the list of roaming locations is a long one......but unlike Giff Gaff they don't exclude the Channel Islands nor charge £2 or £5 per day charge for being in a Roaming area like "3" do :(

Oh, PlusNet have new customer offers right now but as a current BB customer I also had a nice deal i.e. £6 for 4GB boosted to 6GB per month.

Plusnet don't support short codes which can be annoying. I tried smarty but coverage was dreadful. EE Coverage also got worse in a few regular destinations so I went back to giffgaff. Hoping the goody bag system works properly as I left before due to them continually failing to renew them.

I think smarty offer wifi calling as well which does help if you have poor coverage at home or work.

There very little that's cheap. Tesco mobile might be another to check out.

1p mobile, everything is £0.01 it's ridiculously cheap. (y)

Been with Smarty for a while now, they are very good, really cheap and as part of the 3 network good coverage.
In the few years I've been with them there hasn't been a price rise, just a raise in the amount on data allowed per plan.

As I don't need lots of data, I got the £6 a month package, unlimited calls and text 4gb of data wifi calling and 5G
for £12 you get 100gb data and £20 a month it's unlimited, Im VERY tempted to drop my broadband at home as it's unrestricted tethering in the UK

Would it not be better to ditch PAYG altogether, it seems to me that this is the old way to run a mobile as sim only deals are really cheap.
You can get unlimited minutes and texts with a decent amount of data for as little as £6 month

As I mention above for one SIM I have made the switch to a £6 per month service that should work out nicely and may yet make the move with my other SIM but would (at this time ) simply prefer not to be driven to do it.

£6/month go on live a little

1pmobile.

I've been using them for a nearly a year now after I left 3 for their last price hike. They piggy back off the EE network.

1p / minute
1p / text/
1p / Mb Data

Minimum top up is £10 every 3 months.

I have looked at the website and the price is staggeringly low.

As what will likely be my backup number it does look good.

Having read the info I can see one cost saving in their business model......the PAC transfer is all done by the customer!

I have to wonder.............are there any downsides e.g. how easy to PAC away from them

The only downside is you have to top up minimum £10 three times a year.
Even using it as main phone on wifi calling I can't use anywhere near £30 a year so the balance tends to creep up with every £10 credit.
It doesn't expire but you still have to pay the minimum £10 at 4 month intervals
You can have it set up so the £10 goes automatically as if you forget your account will be closed.
Or pay £30 annually.
It might not suit anyone using a lot of data.

I just requested a PAC Code from 3 which was the most difficult bit as they did every they could to hold on to me. I did it via live chat and you just have to be firm with them.

Once you have that, just log into your 1pmobile account and enter it in there. 24 hours later my number was transferred.

My Virgin mobile prices have gone up.
However I still pay £0 per month for unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 100MB data, they even roll the data over for 1 month!
I am not sure when they will realise or if they just don't care.

i generally prefer payg as it removes the risk of running up a big bill accidentally, especially when roaming - i notice that you can get 16gb & unlimited minutes & texts for £10 per month with three which would be my preferred choice - i have generally used three in the uk and ee payg for roaming in countries where three is expensive (never been keen on o2 or voda)

I'm thinking of a new phablet as wifi is no good if used for navigation in a car :wideyed:
1p sounds just right for occasional data downloads when on the move
most satnavs are terrible if you want to plan a specific route with lots of waypoints, or am I a control freak?

Re: satnav ~ the best for mutli stop I ever had was CoPilot on my Loox PDA. It was especially useful when seeing my London customers, I could put in 6 addresses and order them into a best route for time and distance.

I recall there was a car version (mine) and a lorry oriented one that made sure no silly route errors.

Yeah, me too until recently. However, I just renewed my Virgin TV/internet. As a result I now have to pay a crazy 25 quid a month to O2. But that gets me the same as the old Virgin plan and takes 25 quid off my Virgin bill so..... :)

Hilariously, every time I go to the O2 site it tries to offer me upgrades to my unlimited moniutes/data/texts.
