Threads on Gitzo tripod need cleaning

The legs on my Gitzo tripod badly need cleaning/renovating. It's the threads that are the problem, they're either sticky when you want them to move or loose when you want them to stay tight!

Any suggestions on how to do this?

I strip my down and clean them with a toothbrush, then reassemble with the gitzo grease...

I wonder if there's a cheap alternative to Gitzo grease? At £14.95 + £4.95 delivery it's bit pricey.

It's a PTFE lubricant, it isn't cheap stuff as such, but I'm sure it could be found for less.

That may well be similar, not used it, but I don't see why it wouldn't do the trick ...
