I'm contemplating getting one of these if i get a good price on one, but i would like to know your thoughts on it the fors and against, and if you have any pics taken with it you could post here all the better, many thanks :thumbs:
 
My thoughts were quite soft at f2.8 with some weird goings on at the extreme borders. I think photozone has the same problem but perhaps just my copy. By f4 it was very impressive. Couldn't see the point at having 2.8 and reluctant to use it, so sold it on but for the price, there's not a lot to beat it.

Do Tamron have quality control issues then ? i thought only Sigma had this problem.
 
I don't think it's a problem as such but I've heard more problems with this lens compared to the shorter 17-50mm f2.8. Suggest buying locally and test before parting with your cash.

I bought one of these about a month ago and just love it, really sharp. Yes it is abit soft at 2.8, but I got mine for a £170 from ffordes and for that money, I think it is an absolute bargain.


So go for second hand, they are well worth the money.
 
The reviews on FredMiranda seem to point to some QC issues, although there are often reports of variations between different examples of the same lens from many manufacturers.

I tried a 28-75 on a 20D some time ago and found it really slow to focus. Later tried one on a D200 and was surprised at how fast it went. It was also super-sharp wide open.
 
If anyone is finding its not sharp wide open it needs to be serviced - simple as that.

I know of two people here who have needed repairs (on used lenses), Krazy_Horse and AllanM, Intro2020 can sort them out for around £50. Beware if buying used.

The lens IS sharp wide open. If your copy isn't, return it, or get it repaired.
 
Hi and Merry Xmas to all. I purchased this glass about three weeks ago after discussing the possibilities on here. It's a great and like puddleduck states I too found it to be sharp wide open. I couldn't be more pleased, even better my wife paid for it as a birthday pressy.

I used to own one. Required re-calibration, but once that was done by Intro2020, was spot on sharp.
Having said that, I sold it following some comparisons with the L series lenses that I also have. Sharp it might be, but mine had nothing like the colour vibrancy that my Canon lenses have.
 
Ok thanks for all the comments all sounds good so i will have a look around for a good price on one, unless one of you guys want to sell yours for about £170 :D
 
As Puddleduck says, mines gone away for repair because of auto focus issues, but when i used it manually, it was impressively sharp. Cant wait to get it back now, i really miss it.

i have one, and i think its outstanding. My only problem is do i keep the lens when i get my new 50d or do i use both lenses??
 
I had the 28-75 a few years back.
Image quality was quite simply outstanding - yes, it was that good.
Shame the AF speed and general focus operation didn't keep pace as well for me.
