Thoughts on the Canon EOS 600D

Hi, I have had a 600D for about two months and after having the 40D my back has recovered from the dreaded pain due to the light weight and the fantastic articulating screen; good for being able to take low shots and with live view being able to focus acurately, therefore macro shots become easier. The controls on the back are all together and easy to use the "Q" button especially. The end results are better than my 40D (slightly) and I am very pleased with it so far. The video capture is good but I am only just starting on this so still have to learn the ins and outs. Possible downside could be weight ratio using long heavy lenses but it is what you get used to. If you where to purchase one then get an extra battery as live veiw knocks hell out of it and I find using liveview and macro drains the battery, in normal useage the battery seems to last a simmilar time as my 40D allso I leave the quick release bracket fixing of my tripod on the camera and this does not allow me to change the battery without releasing the bracket, little thing but annoying.
There are a number of features on the camera which I have to explore but in time I hope to learn more. Hope this helps. Well pleased with the 600D.
Good luck.
David

Very helpful information there thank you. Hoping to get this camera for my birthday this November.

I've been looking around at DSLR's trying to pick the one for me and I always come back to the 600D, I can't seem to bring myself to comprimise the 600D for the 550D, they perform practically the same with the same sensor but I have a craving for the 600D. It's that articulating screen that I need and want !
Plus when I discovered it had the 'Miniature' effect I wanted it even more, you can get really interesting images with that and it adds a great unique perspective. I like the fact it has an input for an external mic too because sometimes the in-built mic picks up the inner mechanics whizzing and whirling due it's bad placement.

The few extras the 600D has over the 550D might not be worth the extra cash, but I just don't think I'll be satisfied enough buying the 550D.

Yes I had similar thoughts, go for the 550D because it is cheaper or the 600D? for my useage and state of health the addition of the articulating screen outweighed the extra cost. If it wasn't for the screen and the weight I think I would still have the 40D although I am enjoying the simpler navagation more user friendly. The 550D is similar to the 600D but as you say it has added functions which become more needy as you progress through understanding what it can do.
I am trying to come to grips with the video side and have to get more info in how to opperate it. Takes super video but edditing is a nightmare I am trying to sort this out. Have not touched the sound side!!!

Go for it!!!!!!!!

I would go for the 600D, over the 550D, as with the newer camera, your not just getting the new screen, but wireless flash, if you have a EX series flashgun, also, you mention video you get to adjust the mic volume on the camera, as well. with the additions above as has been said, i think it is a better camera, and sits somewhere between the 60D, and 550D.
Another thing not spoke about very often is the slight moulding for your thumb which makes it more comfortable in the hand after some of the buttons on the back have been moved. All in all it feels a more robust and better built piece of equipment.
