Hi guys.

The other day I had a go at imitating a photograph for learning purposes. I've posted it online for critique and also linked to the original image.

What are your thoughts on recreating these images for learning purposes? Would you ask permission before you attempted the shot?

Personally I think it's ok to replicate any photograph as long as full credit is given to the original creator.

Nah, I mean you could say who or what photograph you were trying to imitate for comparison purposes, but the shot was created by you.
You can't put a copyright watermark on an idea, you don't need to credit anyone for your shot.

I think trying to recreate a shot that already exists is one of the very best methods of learning anything about photography :)

I use this alot for my sports images :) i find a style and image that i like but i try put my own slant and technique on it as well

yeah its a good way to learn, however giving full credit to the original creator is difficult because whats to say that person didnt get the idea from somewhere else?

For instance Landscapes would be definately a no no, example:

i have taken several photos of St Micheals Mount in cornwall at various different times, but whilst reading a photography magazine the other day a well known `professional` had their picture of the mount featured in the magazine with a big lusty feature on how good their work was and how successful they are, i seriously had to look twice to see it wasn`t my picture, but at the end of the day that viewpoint has probably been taken a hundred times before and will do again many times more over the years, only difference is the pro will sell theirs for £500 and i`ll sell mine for £20 lol

Personally I prefer to take the ideas from a photo and recreate those in my own way, it may not even look like the original in any sense. I think that recreating work should follow that thought, and not just try to copy the image pixel for pixel as it were.

I once had a bride with loads of magazine cuttings and asked me to simulate the pics she had cut out. I said I'll try my best, but reminded her that there are all sorts of styles and there was only one I was comfortable with. She accepted my excuse, but insisted I do the one I was comfortable with. I am less experienced than the original author of the photograph but gave it a go and she was pleased with the result. Did put me under pressure a bit, and although mine was not as good as the one emulated, she was happy.
