i find the kit lens quite good all round, from image quality, feel, build etc.

however the constant f2.8 of the tamron is tempting, although it won't have VR and I've heard that it can focus slow in low light, but how about compared to the D90 kit lens?

thoughts on these two?

any thoughts of the tam on the d90?

The irony is that on your Sony, the 28-75 did have stabilization, and you've traded it for a 2 stop slower zoom, also with VR.

The lens are chalk and cheese and I really don't think its possible to compare the two in a meaningful way. If you liked the T 28-75 on the Sony, you'll like it on the D90.

thanks

just did a google, and it seems as though the 18-105 is a good kit lens, the tam is suppose to be even better but obviously lacks the focal range

Hey there,

Can't really comment on the tammy, but from using the 18-105 on the D90's that uni has I must say, I do not like it. I know it's a kit lens so I don't expect much so technically it hasn't dissapointed me as I knew it wasn't going to be a star. I much prefer the 18-70 kit lens from the D70/80 to the latst offering. Maybe it's just me being bit harsh but to me it feels alot less solid and less well-built than the 18-70. Very plasticky (sp?).

i've not tried the 18-70, maybe it is a bit plasticky (sp?) but to me and others it performs quite well as a kit lens. did you see a difference in image quality and performance?

What do you expect for the lens?

I would say 18-135 if that is your only lens. It is much useful in all time than 28-75. But if you decide to have more than one lens, I would vote for 28-75mm, or even 17-50 f2,8. And then you can easily have another good 55-200 or 70-300mm to fit the rest range.

It is really hard to say which one is better than another. It is really up to your need.

I had the Tamron 28-75 2.8 on my D90, returned it after a few days of using it on shoots and bought a Nikon 24-70 2.8!

I didn't like the Tamron, it was focus hunting so much even in very well lit conditions. I thought the zoom wheel wasn't very smooth either and just didn't generally like the feel of the lens.

It's quite small and light weight though and the quality is good, but it just wasnt for me!
