Hi,

having just recently bought a 1d Mark II to replace my 30D I am in need of a wider lens as I only have access to a 50mm F1.4 ( which I love ) and a Sigma 500mm F4.5 ( which I love even more ), I am thinking of getting a wider lens for landscape/general photography.

I have previously owned a 28-70 F2.8 and didn't find it wide enough on the 30D, it of course will be wider on the 1D but not by much, what would you recommend. Is 24mm ok on the 1D or should I be thinking 20 or even 17mm.

Not wanting to spend a fortune and would consider a prime over a zoom. I'd be interested in your thoughts

Mike.

Something like the 17-40L springs to mind

Hi,

what took you so long :D

I have been considering the 17-40L so it's on my shortlist.

17-40L here as well.........I use it on the same camera and its great!!........Hope you enjoy the 1D...I upgraded from a 20D and have never looked back.....

The 17-40 is a really good lens, great value for money aswel as it's one of the cheapest L series lenses.

I've used the 17-40L on a 1D MK2 and the slightly larger FOV on the 1:3 sensor makes it a good combination.

Yep, another vote for 17-40 F4L

Yes Mike, the 17-40 is a great lens on the 1D mkII, it's the one that lives on my 1D most of the time, for the times I want to go silly wide I bought the Peleng, which is great fun in a REALLY wide way.

Hi,

thanks all for the help, it was probably the lens I had shortlisted, whether I can really afford one at the moment is a different matter, will keep an eye out for a nice used one, there was one on here and have PM'd the seller although it might be sold by now as the thread is closed.

I had thought about the Sigma 17-70 as I have already owned one of them and like the image quality from it and it would be a cheaper alternative, but I also have a 77mm Hoya pro1 CP filter sitting doing nothing so that would match the Canon nicely and ultimately the 17-40L will be better.

Some of the APS-C only lenses will actually work on the 1D2 without too much vignetting. Some of these include the Sig 10-20 (from about 12mm), Sig 30 F1.4 (actually works very well). But my vote would be either the 17-40 F4, or Sig 15-30. The 12-24 is very wide, and I eventually sold it.

Good point. Not one I can speak to from personal experience.

Sig 15-30 is a cracking lens. I had one when I ran 1.6 crop cameras and loved it...

I use both the 17-40L and the Sigma 12-24 on my 5D, I love wideangle lenses. They are both good lenses but in the few tests I have done the 17-40L seems sharper overall.

I tend to keep the 12-24 as my standard lens on the 30D body which gives the same AOV as a 19-38 which I feel is a nice range for a standard lens.

Depends what you want to do really.

The corner performance problems with the 17-40 and 12-24 on a 5D, are lost when using with a 1D2, and the 17-40 actually is a very usefull focal length on a 1.3 crop body. It really dpends on how you see the world.

Hi,

thanks for the last few posts there about the Siggy's, I think I'm after the 17-40L now right enough, just have to find one at the right price.

Mike.
