OK the challenge, if you accept it, is this. What photography related prezzy can Mrs Lawsyd buy me - to a maximum value of £50? It can be either equipment, or related to photography (such as a book of classic photographs). I would describe myself as a keen & experienced photographer who concentrates mainly on landscapes & seascapes.

To answer your question I'd need a bit more information, without which the whole exercise could be purely academic. Have you been a good boy?

My choice would be a cheap old lens :D
or a book...
Collecting and using classic cameras by Ivor Mantle.

How a £20 present can cost £100s! I have that book and enjoyed reading it (as I'm into vintage stuff) and still enjoy dipping into it a few times a year for reference... but it led to the purchase of several old folding cameras, and some servicing fees to get the ones I really liked working perfectly again so I can enjoy using them. How things can snowball!

I think it's out of print now and only available second-hand, but if you are interested in old cameras then it would be a good read over the Christmas and New Year break, plus you'd have a fair few £ of the budget left for a set of lens cleaning pens and a rocket blower, or something like that as a 'stocking filler'. I seem to remember that there are two editions, one catering for old cameras in general (the one I have) and one about collecting old SLR cameras.

I've been goodish (are men ever totally good in the eyes of their other halves?) & it should be taken into account that the lady in my life has already bought me a 100mm prime for my special birthday in 11 days time.

It's a good book :D Mine cost £10.50 including postage and is in very good condition.

Cheap old lenses can be addictive too but with both books and cheap old stuff it doesn't have to cost hundreds and can be cheap fun if there's enough self control :D

I don't know, but is it possible to buy a voucher towards a workshop/hide/photography day in whatever genre you fancy?

I can resist everything except temptation! Besides, life is not a rehearsal and he who dies with the most toys wins! :D

Best of luck with the pressie Lawsyd, and happy birthday in 11 days time too! (y)

I bought a copy of this book for myself a few years back and loved it.

Horst Hamann uses a vintage 6 3/4" X 2 1/4" panorama camera and tilts it 90 degrees to produce stunning shots.

There's a small version where the height is about long edge of A4 and a bigger version where it's nearer the long edge of A3. it's worth making sure you're getting the bigger version (called the Mega Format, I think).

If the 100mm prime is for Macro, what about a wimberley plamp type thing which can hold plants etc in place?
If you have Lee filters, a field pouch maybe? £38
Perhaps a super posh print / aluminium / canvas of one of your images?
Different feet for your tripod?
A book from the Photographer's gallery in London.

Or a subscription to a magazine. If you like monochrome, Black and White Photography is excellent. Interesting Articles and only a short section about gear.
