Thoughts on a Car Rig Boom after first failure :-/

Right thought I'd start a specific thread on this issue as I need to decide what to do about a car rig boom. I have everything else.

I've read the other thread here from start to finish a couple of times to get information but after doing so bought 6 metres of aluminium pole which was 30mm with a 2mm wall and at 4m had a stupid bounce on it, then fitted a stabiliser t piece and strap but didnt help.

Im basically looking to get opinions on what my next step should be and as I see it there's a couple of options (not including shelling out a grand for a pro setup which is out of budget)

So,

1. Stick with round tube and go for wider tubing, either 1 and 7/8ths" (47.6mm) with a 3.3mm wall or 2" (50.8mm) with a 4.8mm wall

or

2. Square tubing 40mm x 40mm with a 3mm wall or even 50 x 50 by 3.25

or

3. a combination of either of the above and buy a 10-22 lens as Im currently using a 17-55, thus allowing a shorter pole with less bounce, though then using a closer shot at 10mm may cause unacceptable distortion, this is on a crop sensor (1.6)

So any thoughts would be appreciated to help me decide?
 
Most rig shots are done at around 10mm on a crop. I do mine at 15mm on a FF.

However, the more length the better.

I personally think square is best for metal poles.
 
Im leaning toward the square I have to admit, how have you managed to put yours together? I know you've said on the other thread that you have 40x40 and a 4mm wall, nearest I can finds the 3mm wall version, dont think the superclamps would take the 50 x 50 :|

Im leaning toward square tubing plus a 10-22 tamron or sigma at the moment as both seem to go for within 20quid of each other.
 
I'm not sure what my wall thickness is it may be 3mm.

Connected it with some L shaped metal, and 2 bolts and wing nuts in each section. I'd go 2m lengths.

you want a longer focal length than that or you'll end up with a distorted looking car.
 
I've shot with a crop camera and 10-22 and it distorts the car, but you can use that to deliberate effect.

The better way is to go long, look at some of George Williams shots. He goes 6m long. I'm often thinking that a third sucker to distribute the weight of the pole that long might be a good idea.
 
How much bounce are we talking? You'll always have some, which is why rolling the car slowly with engine off ideally works better than driving it. If you take a static shot as well you can composite it together with the rolling shot, allowing you to paint through sharp details like edges of grilles etc from the static shot in PS...

Upgrading to a wide angle lens will make a difference, a supported circular metal tube shouldn't give you any more bouce weight vs. strength.

I know some people support the camera whilst the car is moving, possibly try that next time. Although my rig was only 3m long.
