So i wanted to get peoples thoughts on room lighting when editing.

I tend to edit in the dark with only a small light for background, Xrite recommend lighting at the same level of a cinema during the trailers. What to you do?

and

Do you view you prints under a D50 lamp. If so what brand do you use and where do you get them from in the UK.

Normal living room lighting levels - two 40w equivalent low energy bulbs so not too bright.

If the lights are off I find it's more tiring on the eyes.

I've been looking at getting some natural light bulbs the low energy stuff gives everything a yellow tint. I know I'm being a bit anal but I'm an engineer by day so my colours have to be as good as I can possibly make them.

I use daylight lamps - brought a stock pile of spot lamps from an artists supplier, and have all the walls painted grey, and a black blind I pull down behind the screens

When editing, regardless of the sunny weather outside, I pop the lights on full. That gives me a very even day to day - hour to hour lighting

Daylight bulbs are very dim compared to regular bulbs, 3 x 300W gives me a comfy working environment

The amount of illumination depends on what you are doing. If you are just viewing the monitor screen then provided you can get the screen brightness to a reasonable level then you can have it reasonably low. However if you are going to use it to evaluate prints then you may need it brighter. This shouldn't be a problem provide again you can get a screen brightness to compliment the viewing conditions.

As far as quality of illumination D50 is I think for northern Europe a bit warm. I've tended to use D65 which gives I think a better match to typical UK daylight, and is a standard graphics value that a lot of people use. This tends to make them a lot easier to get hold of. I also looked at the Blue coated "Hobby" bulbs, but found them a bit warm to view prints under. However they are better than nothing. Google 6500K lighting, you should get lots of hits. The viewing lamp that Colour Confidence sell will give you a light of about 5000K if you want to go that way, but it only gives a pool of light rather than verall room ilumination

I also use a blackout blind and 6500K lighting in my editing room.

I will have a look thanks for the info do you all use lamps or can you get bulbs that plug into a normal ceiling rose? I'm assuming most people use plugin lamps

I'm using a bulb (with no shade).
