Thoughts for Cumbria

Clean up has started, residents and shopkeepers/business owners returning in Cockermouth. River still high with more rain to come, and many bridges remain closed..but the Papcastle bridge is now open (A595).

Better news Steve - I'm coming back at the weekend to help tidy up my mum's friends shop. I have another friend who owns Neo's (Debbie) but I think she's refurbishing anyway in Janurary so she hasn't been as badly affected as some others.
I'll try and get some pictures when I'm back of the damage.

just looked at some of my mates pictures from cockermouth, they've done a very good of cleaning up the mainstreet so far. but it will take a lot longer to repair the real damage to the area.

been speaking to another of the lads from my old work whos been flooded out, insurance folks will be in tomorrow to assess the damage.

... The weather at Lancaster though is awful, very windy and lashing it down again and its given it bad for the rest of the week.

Yep, it's raining all the time and very windy - I get soaked going to lectures :(

I heard a report yesterday that the road bridge near the Whitewater hotel at Backbarrow and footbridge slightly further down river have now both gone completely. The road bridge was particularly nice :'(

I've just come back from Cockermouth and finally the main street that was a river a week ago is open to the general public, I did not take my camera. Obviously nothing is open yet but it was both heartening and saddening to be able to walk up and down the street and chat with some of the owners there. Most are swearing to be open before Christmas!

Its incredibly busy and the street is full of skips, contractors vehicles and workmen as shop fitments and stock are taken out and skipped, even the army is there forming chain lines to pass the detritus out of the premises to the street. Some premises are still brushing out mud and water, others are more advanced for example "Boots" will be open to deal with Prescriptions from Monday, and fully open a week later.
Some shops have the Jackhammers in and floors are being dug up, others are removing plaster. It really is a disaster zone and thats why I left the camera at home, I think these people just want to get on with things and are probably fed up with camera crews and such.

Cumbria is very much open for business, come and visit if you wish...its mostly just a little bit difficult to get around between Cockermouth and Workington, river levels have dropped back into their own banks now.

The company I do work for has re opened now, they opened officially yesterday, new furniture networked phone lines everything all within a week and HRH Prince Charles visited them today or yesterday.

Yes, Cumbria is open for business, please if anyone was planning a visit, come along we are nice people !

Couldn't agree more but please be careful and patient, some of the road/bridge diversions are along narrow country lanes not suited to the HGVs that have to use them now.
