Not sure how many of you have seen the sky news overnight and the massive amount of water thats flowing through Cumbria, especially Cockermouth, Ulverston, Kendal and Workington.

Two bridges - one in Workington, one in Cockermouth have collapsed due to the weight of the water, and on twitter there is a report of someone missing.

Having gone through the Carlisle floods in 2005 my heart goes out to all involved. In Carlisle overnight our new defenses got very close to breaching, which was very scary.

Helicopters have been flying over us all night en route to fuel from rescuing in Cockermouth.

Just been watching it on Sky. the speed of the water is what is doing the damage by what the reports say, let's hope now there is daylight they find that officer safe.

I feel so sorry for all of the people affected by this recent round of flooding and high winds. My village was very badly affected by flooding a couple of years ago (the water thankfully didn't reach our house but we had a very frightening 48 hours) and I was in Morpeth last year when there was excessive flooding there.

Radio said 11 people have gone missing over the past 24 hours.

I'm supposed to be going through to Rescue tomorrow but as the weather is set to get back worse i suspect I won't make it through as the road at Newby Bridge is supposed to be closed.

Keep an eye on BBC Cumbria, Radio Cumbria are emergency broadcasting 24 hours.

I was up in Cumbria last week and it was v-wet then but nothing compared to what's going on now. I do hope all people involved are OK and safe.
 
All my lot are alright, none of them live on the flood planes fortunately, though my dad can't get out of the valley he lives in near Kendal! There was also supposed to be a convoy of cars leaving the west of the county tonight as 15 of us were supposed to be going clubbing, but I'm not sure if they'll be able to get out of the county, as Carlisle seems to be the only route out (the A66 is under about 8ft of water nr Brigham according to my vet mate).

Has anyone got any shots of the flooding, in particular the bridges that are down, as I need to see it to comprehend it, if you know what I mean??

Hello peeps,

Just replied to Fab's pm.

I'm at lancaster uni at the moment so I haven't been up since the floods but my mum has sent photos and it's BAD, a lot worse than 2005.

My Grandparents house is flooded - under 2 feet of water and they've lost most of their photos but hopefully I'll be able to restore most of them depending on the condition!

My mates just been on the phone to say they've found a body (probably his), lodged under a rock. :thumbsdown:
 
We seem to have got off lightly here in Beckermet but the A595 south is virtually unpassable and Egremont is flooded again. I am amazed to see the pics on the TV and there's more to come tomorrow - ouch!

Sad thing :'( At least they found the body (if his) fairly quickly.

I'm just wondering what will happen tomorrow if it continues!

Hopefully, homes and shops will be cleaned up fairly quickly as everyone will help each other and it's amazing how quickly Cockermouth recovers after a flood with all the help.
 
It's been confirmed, the PC is dead - found on a beach washed up.

My mum's friend recently opened a shop which is now flooded. People are helping to do as much as they can already, however, some idiots are driving down main street and causing waves, which are damaging properties even more :shake:

I noticed that a few times on the coverage. Same with D#keads pretending to wander around behind the TV interviewer, or worse still ringing their mates to say "look at me on the telly".
They forget people's livelyhoods and homes are all but ruined. My sympathies with everyone affected.

Is the Jennings site flooded I wonder??? That would be the final straw for me!
 
Speaking as someone who is passionate about meteorology, this is very hard hitting for me, and the death of a policeman served to add to it. He died in the name of of duty and while it is of very little comfort for his family, he had saved many lives in the process.
Very worrying times for the people living in Cumbria. :(
 
Thoughts for Bob, even more so now the can put him to rest... well done all the rescue helicopter - I know the one from Chivenor down here went up.. brings back horrible memory's of 2007 when we lived in the midlands

The Policeman died while trying to stop people going over the bridge which collapsed killing him, report said he turned a bus away which wanted to cross the bridge! How lucky were they? There's been bad flooding in Dumfries town centre and my mate said the Motorcycle shop there had all it stock wiped out. We had 15 trees down on our land and our farm track was washed away leaving 2ft trenches, 1st time its ever rain so much but we are used to gales here after losing our roof 3 times in 6 years (our insurance company loves us)
So sad that Bill Barker (policeman) died but there's no way we can stop that amount of water however much money they spend.
BellyBoy the place on the high street where your mum is was 8ft deep last night! and even the rescue boats were struggling to cross the road!
 
news report is quite upsetting, partly because of the police officer, partly because of the damage the water has caused.

and they showed pictures of jennings, flooded, plus the fact that the onsite well will be full of waste water as well :(

id imagine that the bitter end is ok as its quite elevated from the main road, jennings is flooded though (and i imagine that the well is full of flood water as well)

ive got 2-3 people from cockermouth moving into my house up their tomorrow temporarily while they are flooded out.
 
The effect that this will have on the West Coast economy is devastating and the knock on effect is nearly incalculable.

Misery will last, long after Sky News have left - lets just hope Gordon keeps his promise.

Looked through speachless, especially at the ones from around Newby Bridge.
The Whitewater hotel in particular got to me. I was only there a few weeks ago having a meal in the bar next to the river. For those people who don't know this bar has recently finished being refurbished and is at the bottom of the spiral staircase behind what looks to be a waterfall!
 
Those pictures are all so sad. I know the area very well and it's shocking to see it in such a state. My thoughts are with all of those people affected.

Is there a place to send donations? And is there a call for practical donations too (and not just money), e.g. clothes, shoes, and other basic necessities etc that people are going to need?
 
I have a customer up there with a shop on the high street, they were saying the water reached about 8 feet which is a little scary to think about. They had 45 minutes to clear as much of the stuff they had on the shop floor and move it upstairs. I usually park just behind the highstreet near wilkinsons and the floods got to the street behind the car park which is up a hill from the high street. My customer has found a temporary home in what was the job center and i am waiting to see if they need me to go up and sort anything out. Aparently there are people panic buying groceries and fuel now.

Thought go out to all those affected especially the police officer's family.
 
It's very sad indeed to hear about the policeman who died, and what a truly terrible ordeal for the victims of the floods to have to go through. I know Cumbria fairly well and it is a really lovely part of the country.

I'm reminded of the floods in Boscastle, Cornwall back in 2004, and seeing the images on the news. Very sad to watch, and I was there the year before when I spent a fortnight in Cornwall. Seeing this picturesque village after the devastation and watching the residents return to their homes to survey the damage was heartbreaking.
