Yes
I have a small studio and although I have never had any complaints from my work I still think some of my images could be sharper. Im currently using a canon 24-70 f.2.8 mostly.

What Lens would you suggest is the sharpest for studio portraits. I am also a bit limited on space.

You say you're using the 24-70 MOSTLY...does this mean you're unhappy with the IQ from other lenses ?

If the problem only shows up with the 24-70 perhaps it would be worth having it checked over. IQ from this lens is renowned.

Hi There,

I didn't do any back when I had a canon system - only really had studio experience after I swapped to Nikon, but do I remember what my canon lenses were like, so I might be able to help a little..

What kind of studio stuff are you doing?

Asking because if you're shooting against a plain background then you should be getting enough sharpness at F8 with your current lens to make everyone's pores and wrinkles stand out more than they'd like as it is! Super sharp is not normally a good thing unless your models have perfect skin -- just do some moderate sharpening over the eyes in PhotoShop and leave the skin soft and everyone look 10% prettier ;)

If you need a shallow DoF because you're shooting with props etc in the background and the 24-70 is a little mushy wide open (surprised really though - it's considered to be a very good lens - have you tried micro adjustment on it?) then look at what focal length you're using most and buy a prime at that length - in limited space the 50mm f1.4 is probably worth a look if that's the focal length your using a lot (I had the 1.8, but REALLY didn't like it and returned it for the 1.4). The 85 1.8 is very sharp too and not expensive.

The 24-70 is generally considered pretty sharp. Are you sure you don't have a slight front/rear focus bias?

Have you tried a prime lens?

although i have a 50f1.4 and 85 f1.8 since getting a 24 to 105 f4 they never get used .for a full lenth shot i shoot at 35mm = 45mm field of view with my mk3 im happy with the IQ I get at f7.1.
Rob.

Have you got any examples? Are you shooting at f2.8?

Usually I use F8 - f11 in the studio unless I want to change the depth of field for any reason.

Your Canon 24-70 f/2.8 should be capable of producing pin-sharp results in any lighting conditions, never mind in a studio where you have total control over everything.
Are you certain it's a lens issue and you've not done something to the in-camera sharpening? Like switched it off?
Other problems as detailed above - could be a very slight front/rear bias which you can correct in-camera via the custom menu sections.

If you've really lost faith in this lens (and it does happen) then for tight spaces, the 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.2 will be lovely - but not cheap.

It would seem we have the same setup (5D classic and 24-70) and love the image including the sharpness this combination produces. I think you need to post up some pics so you can demonstrate where your concerns are?

Hi Guys

Thanks guys. I find this lens great for weddings but not getting sharp enough in the studio maybe its just me. I have a 50mm 1.4 and have been using that again I am happier with the images but how do I I check that I havent switched off the in camera sharpening?

Will sort out some images though!
