I am still getting one or two of those previously mentioned phone calls despite being on the Telephone Preference opt out scheme....... I have had some good fun with various companies but over the weekend I have come up with the best reply ever (in my opinion)......... you can hear the sweat running out of every pore

call goes something like this........

Caller: Can I speak to mr Goodwin ( my name isn't even Goodwin)
Me: Hello, How did you get this number?
Caller: We have you on our database, Sir
Me: You can't have, This is a secure Government line which is not available to the public or any companies.
Caller: I am so sorry, I will have the number removed straight away.
Me: I need your name, your company name and address. I also need to be put straight through to your supervisor.
Caller: Of course straight away.....[Gives me details requested and puts me through to manager]

Manager:Can I help you
Me: Your company seems to have accessed a secure government communication line and you will need to speak to someone from another department so we can ascertain how you have come to have sensitive Government information and communication details.
Manager: I am so sorry but its on our database and it automatically rings the numbers....
Me: Well, you need to remove the numbers straight away and someone will be in contact with you shortly. Thank you for your time.

CLICK!!!!!! followed by a chuckle

My daughter just says hold on I will get them for you and then leaves them holding best so far 20 minutes. It throws there call handling system out

Oh very good, must try that next time ;)

I've done that too.

I get fed up with these calls, the latest seems to either for a Mr. Roberts ?? who can never, ever have lived here (1st owner of the house), a lifestyle survey or green energy ... the last one I had went a bit like this ...

Caller: Is that Mr. Roberts?
Me: No.
Caller: Is Mr. Roberts there?
Me: I don't know ...
Caller: Are you the householder?
Me: No, I just look after the hamsters, but ...
Caller: Hamsters?
Me: Yes, but can you help me with them?
Caller: I'm sorry I'm not sure I know what you mean?
Me: Well one got out and got stuck in the dishwasher
Caller: Dishwasher? Sir I'd like to talk to Mr. Roberts please
Me: He's in the dishwasher ...
Caller: Mr. Roberts is in the dishwasher?
Me: Yes, he's my hamster ...

click ....

The last one of these I did I had my daughter and her partner in tears with laughing - well it passed a few minutes ;)

If you ever get tired of playing with them, consider a phone like this:

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/phones...ering-machine-twin-handsets-10027617-pdt.html

The way the scam and nuisance calls work none of their calls can get through.

Got one of those direct from BT cheaper :D and yes they do work, a lot of my spam calls were from international
callers, blocked them and not had one since, used to come home to at least one ansaphone message a day.

My best wind up was when I got a call from a conservatory salesman and decided to sound really interested.
He made an appointment to come and see me, but I forgot to mention I lived in an upstairs flat at the time ;)
He was a tad less them amused when he arrived

Ask them to repeat everything. It puts them off their well rehearsed script.

Steve.

you can have hours of fun trying to get the sub-continental ones off script.

does it get dark at night there?
what time is it?
please can you say "over" every time you finish speaking?
do you have a good recipe for [insert choice]
HELP I am being held hostage. HELP!

Ignore them.
Job done.

The missed call number withheld is also very annoying but even worse is when I dial 1471 I get told number 0000 0000 0000 0000 called though the number of 0 might be a miscount. About time BT put in place some filters to stop these sort of calls!!!

Then don't dial 1471.
If it's important they'll call back.

It is worth noting that you being the first owner of your house makes no difference

Telephone numbers are recycled so more than likely you are not the first owner of your telephone number

It's not as much fun as some of the solutions on here, but just spend £25 or so on call saint call blocker. It's dead easy to block a number and it just works.
No connection with the company other than as a satisfied user.

Someone was telling me about these a couple of weeks ago.
Are they good?
Are there any negatives?

Had mine for a couple of weeks and love it.
Battery life on the handsets seems very good, which is a bonus over my previous phone
Not had a single nuisance call get through, no messages left on the ansaphone which is what I was getting daily, perhaps it's
just a quiet period
Basically anyone in your phonebook gets straight through, anyone not in the book is screened and asked to say who they are.
Your phone then rings and you are told who is calling.
You then have 4 options:
Accept the call once
Always accept calls from that number
Block the number
Send to ansaphone

You do need caller display for it to work, something I have always had anyway, but other
then that I am happy with it, you also change the screen colour and wallpaper
How cool is that (y)
Any additions you make to the phonebook or other are auto sync'ed on all handsets.
You can also set individual blocked numbers yourself, international calls, mobile calls etc.
Plus you block outgoing calls to these as well.

I had an email from BT offering it to me for £50 delivered, arrived in a couple of days

As Gremlin has said, they are excellent, probably the best performing cordless I've owned, and the truecall features work perfectly. I haven't had a single nuisance call since buying them.

Thanks Ingrid & Dave.

Looks like i'll be getting one. (y)

Latest wheeze from one of these companies was a call to a friend who was recently widowed.

"Hello is that xxxx?"
"Yes ... who is that please?"
"It's your husband dear, don't you recognise my voice?"

Unfortunately she was so upset that she put the phone down and didn't get any details.

Surely that qualifies as "distressing and harassing" I think BT has a number to call about that and think even if caller number withheld as long as you can report date and time of call they can act???

Having said that that was a very cruel script the caller was working from! :(

Yes I'm sure she could act on it but understandably just wants to put it behind her :(

An even cheaper idea, I don't have a LL plugged in.
In these days of unlimited calls, or "massive amounts of minutes, on a mobile,
seems pointless. anyone that still calls me from a LL knows to hang up after a couple of rings and I'll phone them back.
Unknown or private numbers are not answered, numbers I don't know I Google first.

The only sales calls I seem to get are from EE, (my provider) and I know their number(s)
so I don't bother answering them.

We don't answer caller withheld #'s or ones we don't recognise....BUT, they are friggin annoying! So at least now we won't be disturbed. Cheap @ less than £40.

Can't argue with that but as the spammers have't got my mobile number,
after several years, of the same one, I just let the spammers ring my home number, they hear it ring but I don't :D
and if I don't want to be disturbed, the mobile goes on silent.
That's my why of dealing with them :D

Absolutely. They know exactly where it originated from and the appropriate authorities can make a request and deal with it. I would report it immediately.

Mind you, I don't have a Mob................ so I've got total peace now!

We also have this set and works really well. Not a nuisance phone call at all.

Truecall does it for me (recommended on here), you can tailor it to deal with many different options and it will silently deal with even unknown junk calls without ever bothering you - a bit more expensive but really the 'bees-knees' :)

Not everyone has those options on a mobile and you still get charged for 0800 numbers :(
Sadly I do get a few sales calls on my mobile, but I immediately block the number once I've checked online,
can't really ignore anonymous calls as mu works uses one and they don't have my home number :D
I do have a BT app on the phone that allows me to use my BT allowance via the internet, handy
when out and about

We still get nuisance calls despite being on the opt out scheme so may invest in one of those phones.

What pi$$e$ me off more though is that within a couple of hours of putting my new vodafone contract sim in the phone I stared getting nuisance texts, from slimming pills to, you have £2250 waiting for you from your accident. No one new my number at that point not even family. How do they manage it, is it vodafone?

I use my mobile number as a contact whenever it's needed so on that basis I suppose it's pretty much assured
that I will get the odd nuisance call, at least I can block them once I find out ;)

If I must phone an 0800 number I'll plug the LL in or search for the area code same goes for the premium rate numbers.

If my firm did that I'd just ignore them too , they'd soon learn to use an identifiable number :D

I think that's definite proof, is that they have "sold" your number ;)

It's TrueCall that is built into the BT cordless that Carlos is buying.

If it is it's very good but the spec doesn't seem to show it's the full product.

Well, it's not the "full product" as the TrueCall technology is actually built into the phone base.

The BT8500 is quite simply the phone we've been waiting for since February 2009. That was when we first reviewed the rather-brilliant TrueCall device, a clever little box that screened and blocked calls so you only talked to the people you wanted to talk to. Finally, we now have a phone that comes with this technology built-in, the BT 8500.

BT has taken the TrueCall technology and streamlined in two respects. Most obviously it has done away with the extra box, along with extra cable and power, with the technology instead being built discretely into the typically-sized base unit of the BT 8500. Secondly it has simplified the way you set up call screening with you simply pressing numbers 1-to-4 in order to handle calls.

What features are missing over the basic TrueCall unit?

I get annoyed when I receive unknown calls on my skypein number but just block them and report them as spam. Wish I could do the same with all the apparently gorgeous women who want to be my friend - blocked ,report as spam
