thinking about his ebook on the s5 but is it all stuff you can put together yourself/find out in various sources or a genuinely good guide to get the best out of the s5?

Not sure, but will be able to let you know soon as I've just ordered the D700 guide. The Nikon manual is very comprehensive though I have to say, so I'm not expecting it to revolutionise my use of the camera but it might have some interesting bits and bobs in.

I've read the D300 guide, it's just a more "readable" version of the manual, plus a few tips.
If you've read the manual, you'll have covered 90%+ of the material in the guide.
