Not sure if I should have put this in the 'Talk Photography' section, or the 'Out of Focus' section. ;)

I'm on holiday in Rome atm. :D I haven't been for 2 years, and as you do in major tourist attractions you get offered many things by the street sellers. Things change with fashion, and it seems, by location. Sunglasses, check. Fake designer bags, check. Hats, check. If it is raining, Umbrellas, check. Mini tripods, at least at sites with a nice view, less than usual, but check. And less tripods, because almost everywhere is the seller of the selfie stick. And there are loads of them.

I was taking some pics last night, and I heard a seller trying to sell a selfie stick to a person with a selfie stick. His tack was that the selfie stick that the person was using was last years model, and that the new sticks have a button in the handle to take the picture. Needless to say, the person didn't suddenly say 'OK, I'll just lash this stick, which has been working fine, and buy another one!' Got to admire him for going for the hard sell.

I was in Naples late last year and didn't see any selfie stick sellers. Possibly because Naples is not the most attractive city to get you pic taken against. ;) In Naples though, the selfie stick seller was replaced by the ubiquitous mobile phone case seller. Something oddly missing in Rome. It is weird how they sell different things in different locations. Sadly, I think if you are going on holiday abroad get ready for the selfie stick assault.

'No Grazie', is the phrase if you are going to Italy btw. ;)

"Ohi efaristo" in Greek! (Phonetically, at least...)

"Yok" in Turkish. Although it's the less polite way of saying no.more akin to stuff off really

There have been few people walking around with GoPro's on sticks, seemingly as their 'holiday camera'.

There was a chap today trying to take a picture over a door with his GoPro on a stick. Stick too short, so he gets on friends shoulders. Still too short, a chap pops out the queue with a stick about 4 feet long, which combined with chap on shoulders, did the trick. After all the messing about, got a cheer from assembled crowd. Not sure what the pics turned out like.

To drag this back, in Rome atm. It's only a matter of time before a selfie stick gets rammed up the sellers arse. On a more positive note there are lots of thunderstorms around, I'm sure they'll make great lightening conductors

Dim diolch is a phrase that generally gets the reaction I want in the seller - confusion followed by the desire to talk to someone else.

Last weekend Prague was full of selfie stick users and worst of all retards using full size tablets as camera holding them in the air...:bat:

i find it strange that on a photography site some people can get so angry in other people taking pictures....

Its not so much the taking of photos.....it the people trying to sell you them. More then two minutes peace sometimes would be nice

If you think Naples is bad try going to the pyramids in Egypt.

I don't wave sticks in the air, poke peoples eyes out or obstruct other people views with tablets the size of floor tiles when taking my photos...

I was in Florence and Lucca last year and never had anyone approach me- maybe I just look frightening :)

All over the place in Venice. then I observe the selfie-obsessives taking photos and trying to judge the angle they must have awful backgrounds in the shots... Do these people have no friends?

I've considered buying one and fitting a taser decorated to look like a camera - ideal for when the going gets tough between Rialto and Piazza San Marco

I was in the south of Spain a couple of weeks ago and although there were any selfie sticks available in the markets there was no hard sell from vendors.

A long arm and a flip screen was good enough for my purposes but when people saw what we were trying to do they asked if I would like them to take their picture. I agreed and was able to reciprocate by taking a family portrait for them. It was like the good old days :)

Off to Rome next weekend so I'll see if the same trick works there.

Not overly keen on selfie sticks but a nice "holiday drone" would be good...
