Am I just a grumpy old man? I am getting more and more frustrated with the responses that members are giving in threads. Does anybody actually read the OP's thread, check out the profile and then answer the question that was asked. Or do you just swiftly look at the original question and decide that was the wrong question to ask and make up your own response to a totally different question.

Example, Which of these two lenses is best A or B?
Answer, You don't want those you want x or y.

Example, I have £150 to spend on a lens for landscape what do you recommend?
Answer, You should buy X it's great value at £300.

Example, I want to buy a new bridge camera for £250 with macro and 8x zoom what do you suggest.
Answer, You should buy a DSLR with a 50mm lens.

Nearly every other thread has this sort of response and I really dont understand why. If you cant answer the question then why bother posting.

I feel better for that!

I know some clever **** will respond with the answer to a different question and I will think 'Why did I bother'.

buy cheap buy twice. Nothing wrong with suggesting something else that will give them better quality. Nothing worse than buying something, getting excited and then realising that its not exactly what you wanted! Wish someone had told me that the D60 didn't have an AF motor built in before I bought it :(

buy cheap buy twice. Again, trying to save people money in the long run.

I can understand this being annoying, but again, its trying to make people realise that there are better options out there.

I totally agree with that.
I just laugh it off though.

I see your point to a certain degree.
However, when people reply to an OP they should explain why they won't achieve what they want to do on a very low budget.
I know it's just an example that you have stated but some people really do think they can get a landscape lens for £150.
Another thing I have noticed is that some of the people replying to the posts just lately seem to have a low post count.
This doesn't necessarily mean they are new to DSLR's themselves but sometimes one can read between the lines and realise that they are.
When I joined last year, I noticed that a lot more people with a high post count often answered my questions.
I could be wrong but I think a lot of longterm members are fed up answering the same questions time after time and tend not to bother.

We really do need an FAQ advising people to go to a shop and handle a camera before making a decision etc etc.

I suppose we already have this with the search facility, but the fun of the forum is that it allows us to experience the personal chat with fellow members. I think it is the popularity of the forum that has brought it's own problems.

I advised him to buy a DSLR and I stand by it. I made the mistake of buying a bridge thinking it would do the job I wanted it to but I ended up upgrading to a DSLR. What he actually said was he had a £250 budget and people recommended he spend it on a DSLR rather than a bridge. I don't think anyone suggested he blow his budget to do it.

Having said that, I agree there has been a growth in the unhelpful responses we've seen in here recently. You need to just ignore them or report them.

That wasn't pointed at you Rob, it was just an example of the sort of responses that some people have given.
With that particular thread I did say that a bridge would not offer the same IQ as a DSLR, but for a 15 year old who wanted to try all types of photography from macro to telephoto on a budget of under £250 a bridge was the only practical solution. If he's anything like my son was at 15 he will be wanting a guitar by the time his next birthday comes around and the camera will be in the back of the cupboard. :)

You also pointed out that people often fail to look in to a posters profile to find out more about them. I'm certainly not going to do that. I had no idea this guy was 15. He kept saying his Mum was buying the camera for him but I can't guage just from that that he's so young. If the fact that he was only 15 was relavent then it should have been in the original post. No one is going to be perfect on an internet forum, you just have to accept that.

Spot on Crusher! You are the only one who answered my question, and I hadn't realised until now.

Well at least the only one with a question mark after it!
