I didn't know if I should post this in OOF or the computers/electronics bit, but I decided to stick it where it'll get more traffic, as It's a pretty complicated question.

My friend has a small farm, about 170 metres away from his house. Here he keeps sheep, cows etc... Now he wants a CCTV system for his farm. He had one, but the cable (cat5) snapped, and he want's to replace the nasty grey cable he had lying around on the ground all the way there, and up in the trees etc... With a wireless system.

I suggested, why not try and use those homeplug ethernet plugs, since its on the same electric network, the signal would work. Is there any realistic way of running 4 cameras, through the electric cables via homeplugs, and into his computer/mac/tv?

Thank you for any advice.

I am not an electrician, but don't they need to be on the same "ring" to work?
I know my neighbour cant use his plug in baby monitor in his garage. Same meter different "ring"

I think if it runs through the same meter it works..I'm pretty sure that's it anyway

I have 3 set up in my house 2 in the main house one in the wing, different ring circuit but same meter, so I would say its same meter.

They are even plugged into extension leads too and still no problems

Thanks everyone. Yes the farm area and the house is all on the same electricity circuit.

Mark, can I just plug this into the electricity via homeplug, then connect it to a computer/tv back at his house?

175mtrs is a bit far for wireless but you can buy either a 2.3GHz or 1.xxGhz camera inc receiver for less than £30 on eBay if you want to try it. I have Wireless cameras on the house and garage fed into the TV distribution system via rf modulators, if I want to view one I just pick that analogue channel.

Be careful here, they'll need to be on the same phase and farms usually have 3 phase supplies ;)
