This CRB-check paranoia won’t stop another Soham

christmas 2007 my wife and I took our children to florida staying at a disney hotel, they were playing in the pool but I didn't take my camera down, then I saw a few people with cameras so I asked the lifeguard if it was Ok to take pictures of them, she gave me a puzzled look and said, of course, why wouldn't it be , so I did and nobody batted an eyelid.

Earlier this year I drove past some adults playing a village green cricket match , I asked they guy keeping score if I could take some pics, er I think our team are all over 18 but you'll have to ask the other captain, so I ask,er I think we're all over 18 but i'm not sure, at this point one of the players mums shouts out bloody hell they're only playing cricket let him take some bloody pictures, so I did.

We must be the most paranoid country on the planet, still somebody is paying for all these CRB checks so it keeps the money rolling in, same as kids passports, speed/drink awareness courses,
3 points sir, give us £90 and it'll all go away:suspect:

12 month dring driving ban, give us some money and we'll knock 3 months off

I agree with most of what you are saying Darren. But that paranoia is often being fuelled by misinformation. My point is that there are jobs / careers where there has always been checks and for good reason. That is where there has to be some degree of checking. The situations where people are looking for sex offenders around every corner (and particularly those menaces with cameras ) is causing everyone to lose the plot. Me included. :) The government / terrorism / press is causing us all to get paranoid and that is actually harming the genuine need for some checks because people have had enough and there is a bit of a backlash.

Anyway, how's the jag?

Chris :)

Mr Martin Parr came to our college last year to do a lecture on his past work, amongst these images was an almost frontal shot of naked boy on a beach, surrounded by parents and other holiday makers, this was part of a set of documentary images based on UK holidays in the 80's. This is an iconic image but just think of what would happen now if a world famous photographer took such a shot.

POST NUMBER 100 yay!

This is really pointless. Now I avoid ALL children as little devils because some mobs just love to call everyone paedophile. And SOME children are in fact physically very dangerous themselves.

CRB may prevent 0.0001% of all cases but most potential offenders are not know by police as they haven't been caught or haven't yet offended. Even worse, leave children alone and they will happily learn to mug, assault, shoplift and kill. This country is looking more and more like Bronx (New York, USA).

Maybe there should be an IQ and a common sense test before the parliamentary elections?!

Yep bad news travels faster than the speed of light. Somebody would tell somebody else you failed a child pervert safety check, and the mob with burning torches would be soon on the warpath. You have to remember these mindless idiots are looking for an excuse for trouble, thats all the excuse they need to make your life hell.

I would add, that very often the baying mobs are members of the criminal classes themselves.

interesting, as im 22, and im seeing a 16 year old girl, its not an issue, im glad i dont work with her!!!

Quick, we've found one. Sharpened pitchforks, flaming torches, get them whilst they're hot

:D:D:D

I've got shots of my kids on the beach running around naked, plus others of them and their friends in the bath (all are now aged 20+). I bet Boots wouldn't print them now, yet they did then.

Paranoia fuelled by the media? We never let the kids out to play now, yet at 10/11 I was running around playing in the streets/park etc.

eaxctly, but im legally allowed to sleep with her?? but, if i wanted to mentor her at college, then iv have to be crb'd. makes no sense

Bizarre, and perhaps even ostrogobulous (My daughter's favourite word at the moment. She's a scientist and occaisonally visits the planet the rest of us live on).

It's very confusing, isn't it? You can have a consensual sexual relationship with someone at 16, marry or live with them (without parents consent in Scotland) and have kids, but you can't take an "erotic" photograph of them.

Nor can they buy alcohol or fags, drive, etc etc.

Thats the obscurities in the law though.

I have read this thread with some interest. The irony of all the paranoia around CRB checks - a lot of which grew out of the Huntley case - is that Huntley would never have been caught by a Standard CRB check anyway. Huntley only had a one previous conviction for Driving Not In Accordance with a Licence (i.e. he didn't have one) and Driving Without Insurance - two very common traffic offences that usually go hand-in-hand. It wouldn't have barred him from being a school caretaker.
