I am finding that importing photos from my compact flash card to lightroom 3 being slower than aperture 3 I though lightroom was meant be faster?

Ive not used aperture but LR is plenty fast on my set up - you'd probably find it faster to copy all the files in the card onto a hard disk then bring them in to LR from there - especially if your card reader is an older one and not USB 2 or firewire

My card reader is a usb2 just it not as fast as aperture

Not used Aperture, does it generate previews as it imports?
I tend to also copy the files to hard disk first and then import from there.
You could try changing the import file handling options for previews from standard to minimal. That should speed up any delays from generating the previews.
