weekly Thirsty's TP 52 challenge for 2016 - Week 52 Celebration

Hi Nigel
Liquid - Hmm, dunno. On theme, but doesn't really do it for me. Perhaps because of the muted colour palette?
Cracked - This I like. The vibrancy of the colours, with the blue and green complementing each other well. It's also a fine piece of (presumably Victorian) engineering. (y)
Spooky - Nice piece of editing. I'm guessing two images taken sequentially on a tripod, then the second one blended in using the opacity slider or perhaps multiply?

Really liking your image for Spooky Nigel love the textures and b&w processing

Blue bridge is an interesting one cracked as in pealing.

River/canal bank ... good spot for a ghostly character.

Great catch up! My favourite on is "spooky", works well with the half transparent silhouette by the river.

Nowt wrong with the rain on glass shot Nigel, a typical grey vision we all get at this time of year !!!

Cracked - Lovely colour and leading line of the arch, can't help but like flaky paint :)

Spooky - Ahhhh a shady river bank with a ghostly figure, a good idea and nicely portrayed :)

And a good catch up too !!!

Thanks DK

You're almost caught up Nigel, well done.

Liquid is spot on for the theme, we see enough of it. I love the bright blue of the bridge for Cracked, and Spooky works perfectly.... excellent idea to add the ghostly figure ....very nicely done.

Thanks Susie, I know liquid is a bit lame but thank you for your comments :-).

Hi Tim, I know about the liquid shot, not the best attempt :-). Thanks for your comments on the others. Spooky was two shots and blended using opacity sliders.

Great textures in that bridge Nigel and spooky works brilliantly :)

thanks Emma.

thanks Mark, was pleased with how that one came out.

thanks was mine too. :-)

Great lighting and focus Nigel and such an interesting looking character too. Love the b&w processing.

Nice lighting on that pose Nigel, I like this lighting and I need to try it more myself, very nice

I like the pose shot quite a bit, but I think its lost just a tad too much detail on the dark side,

Great portrait and great lighting!

Agree... that is great lighting, now that is the type of portrait I like (y)

Thanks DK.

thanks Lee, certainly something I want to do more off. :-).

Meh cant please everyone :-).

Hi Nigel,
Seems a little dark on Camera left to work as standard Rembrandt lighting.
Plenty of detail on the face on the lit side though :)

Yeah I played around with the shadows a bit but liked this in the end :-).

Great portrait and great lighting!

Thanks Bernd.

The lighting works for me Nigel - very dramatic and you have captured a great connection with the subject. Very nice job

thanks Emma, not done much portrait stuff but enjoyed this session.

Very nice Nigel I like the lighting some lovely detail

Thanks Mark.

Hi Nigel

Portrait's very nicely done.

News .... what's that a train station? good textures, lots of character.

Seedlings! you're lucky to find any this time of year.

Radio tuned to Classic FM ... that's cultural, I like the inclusion of the garlic and things.

Arranged ... nice low action shot, great colour ... but "arranged"?

Hi David, thanks for your comments the station is my local one (Amersham)

Seedlings, my girlfriend is a Gardner and we have a fair few in the greenhouse :-).

Arranged - I was shooting with a Pro and we were working with the skier to capture some shots so we had arranged the shot we wanted and where we wanted her to ski (a bit of a shoe horn I confess).

Great catch up Nigel!

I like the light and the textures in your (no) news picture. Great find and well composed. And (shoe horn or not) I like the picture of the skier, well exposed, nice low PoV... nothing to criticise.

Another good catch-up Nigel. Like the visual play on the theme for News, lovely soft DoF for Young and a good compo for Cultural. My fave of the set though is the skier for Arranged - movement is captured really well.

Hi Nigel,

News - Well, you've got me wondering which station that is. Wooden doors and old brickwork. I'm going to guess at something on the recently taken over part of the London Overground, as TFL won't have been able to 'modernise' them yet.
The little we can see of the platform canopy shows it to be ex Big Railway, and not anything tube related.

Young - Where did you manage to get that, at this time of year!
The DoF is a bit shallow for me, or misplaced. I don't think that having only the tiny plant just to the right of centre in focus really works, for me the subject would have been the larger one on the left, but that's completely oof.

Cultural - On theme... A bit of a messy shot though, both foreground and background. Would have worked better as a stand alone on a black background, or maybe against a plain kitchen wall.

Arranged - Lovely shot. Crisp blues, details in the snow, motion stopped, but the spray shows that there is movement.
Nailed it :)

News - an old evening standard version of that was my first thought for the theme but didnt see any...

Young - bit of a shoehorn, but I cant comment on that this week....

Cultural - ah, Ma's radio! Nicely spotted .Knew I recognised it,

Arranged - Pick of the bunch without doubt, but then after being taken out there fOC, you should be happy......

:)

Well done with catching up Nigel, I really like the portrait for Pose, great lighting. Excellent choice in the b&w for News and I like the DOF for Young with the focus on the perfect seedling. I like the 'busy' surrounding for the radio in Culture and of course the ski shot is spot on .....really captures the action.

Great catch up Nigel I particularly like your arranged image

Nice catch up, really like your arranged.

Thanks Clive.

Arranged is a wonderful shot - great colour and action

Thanks Emma.

Thanks.

Your first male and female shot for me, Nigel - I really like the composition here with space for them to walk into - I'm not sure if I would have cropped the wall on the right, too. I like the shot for out and about very much - the silhouettes, rim lighting and softness of the distant landscape work very well for me.

I agree with Emma ... #1 for Male/Female - clearer bg, position of the feet, rim lighting about their heads. Nice subject for Out & About - like that lovely OOF bg but hard to distinguish between the dog and bench leg.

Hi Nigel.
Male / Female - The first of the two images for me, by a country mile.
It seems far more evocative than the second. Possibly the composition on the third? Possibly because it doesn't have the distracting oof bush that the second has.

Out and About - Nice use of silhouette there whilst still being perfectly obvious as to what the shot is about.
With his position, I'm imagining him lighting a pipe.

Male and Female number 1 for me.

Out and about is a great shot, but Im a sucker for that style.

Hope you have some snow out there !

Nearly there Nigel lovely images for both Male/Female and Out and About out of the 2 images for Male/Female I prefer No 1 personally

Thanks Emma, I wasn't sure if cropping it out worked but having looked at it again your right my cropping it in a bit it helps, I liked the rim lighting too :-).

Thanks Tim, I think he was on his phone :-)

And another for the first couple image, the background is much more pleasing to the eye and the general feel of the surroundings... I really like the silhouetted man and dog too, just one more to go mate (y)

Thanks DK, took me longer to get 2016 finished than I hoped but done now :-).

Thanks :-) and we did eventually.

Thanks Mark, looks like everyone went for number 1 :-)

Lovely shot to finish on Nigel ... no critique to offer - good compo, nice reflections, lovely colours. Well done.
