Yes
Hi folks, I have two a studio light set up, but need to know if it's possible to trigger a 580 ex flash gun as a third light, for say lighting the background. If it is, this would obviously save me purchasing another flash head. The lights I have have IR sensors, excuse my ignorance if it's not possible.

Yes it's possible.

For the 'how' we probably need more info, re your current triggering habits.

Thanks Phil, There's a third party transmitter on the hotshoe, and in the sync slot on the lamp, there's a third party receiver. Just a thought, but would the flash off the lights trigger the flash on the 580, if it was set to slave?

No, there's no 'optical slave' on the Canpn. Can the receivers you have be attached to the 580? The studio lights will almost certainly have an optical slave mode.

Ok Phil, I thought the Off, Master, and Slave settings on the 580 EX might work. (Maybe only with another Speedlite) There are a couple of other sockets but I don't recognise either, one is a three pin. I could maybe switch to a Younguo set up, as I've got three of those receivers, not too sure of the fittings though.

The off, Master and Slave settings are for the Canon 'wireless' system that needs line of sight and uses light pulses.

It can be fired by a wireless trigger connected at the hotshoe, or connected by the PC cord. I don't know which YN receivers you have, but they'll almost certainly give you options. (The 3 pin connection is for a power pack),
