As the title suggests, I'm thinking of upgrading my D3300 body. My budget top end is probably going to be around the £700-1000 mark. Any suggestions? I don't know how the Nikon body levels rise, D3300, D300, D3?! (Not necessarily looking at a 3!).

Any help would be great!

For that money staying dx wont get you better iq but will get you a more pro body with pro features over the 3 and 5 series.
If i was going to spend that i would probably get a used d750 with a 50mm 1.8 for now,you will see a difference with that plus get pro features

Wauv nice shots from Copenhagen om your Flickr account.

Looking at your photo stream it's evident that your equipment isn't holding you back. You have two options full frame or mirrorless. Full frame is better image quality at higher ISO and better shadow recovery in editing. Mirrorless would have a similar level of image quality but a different functionality in how you shoot.

Thanks for the comments and feedback about my current photostream. If I go full frame will my DX lenses not operate on a full frame body? Ideally I'd like to stick with Nikon as that's the functionality I am used to.

you will need to get different lenses im afraid but the 50mm 1.8 is cheap and very sharp once stopped down a bit
PS
I agree with Clive,i really like your flikr stuff. do you really need to upgrade ?

Since when do people only upgrade when they need improvement? Better ergonomics, better build quality, weather resistance and much better on-body controls can be reason enough. Also OP clearly enjoys shooting wide angle, FX will allow him to go wider again. Going full frame is an investment, but your gear will always have better re-sale value also. I would go with the suggestion of a used D750 + 50mm 1.8. You don't say if your budget includes what you might make on selling some of your DX gear? You could consider selling them and getting a nice wide zoom for the FX

Wouldn't you be better of telling him to invest in glass as you had a d750 but went back to a d3300.

I would ask the question - what do you want to get from upgrading?

Do you want better IQ? You will need to upgrade to FX or spend the money on lenses because afaik all Nikon DX bodies have the same/similar 24MP sensor
Do you want a flip out/touch screen & more focus points? The D5xxx range would be a good choice
Do you want a tougher, bigger body with micro focus adjust? D7xxx range might be for you

I just upgraded from a D3300 myself and wanted more focus points, a flip screen & an incognito camera to use for street photography...I almost went for the D5300/D5500 but I discovered the Olympus EM1 which has more features than any Nikon DX body at a lower price (£419 2nd hand) which for me was worth the drop in megapixels.

So I'd decide what you are upgrading for, then the choice should become clearer!

None of the Nikon DX bodies will give you any major improvement in IQ but will give better AF systems, better build etc as already mentioned. If you still want to upgrade based on this then a used D7200 would be a very good upgrade. I think used D500's are still out of your price range but if you're willing to wait until the price comes down then they really are the bees knees.

Going full frame would mean ditching all your DX lenses realistically, and investing in FX glass is not cheap for the most part. That being said, you can pick up some old gems relatively cheaply.

I think the wide angle is a big pull, as you mentioned I do like to shoot wide angle, it makes up a large part of what I tend to shoot. I think this is one of the main reasons why I have been looking at FX bodies.

I went from a D3300 to D7200 and the difference was amazing.

I then went from D7200 to D610 which was amazing too.

I've kept the D7200 but sold the D3300.

Both are within your budget.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the 7200 too!

It might be that I put more investment into my glass, I don't really want to change systems all together as I do like the Nikon system.

Looking at your shots on flickr, I can't see anything there that you have struggled with. I don't see a body upgrade improving much there either.

Thanks very much!

Thanks for the advice I'll definitely check out the 7200.

Hi Daniel,
as someone who has and still uses a d3300 and has owned a d7200 also without doubt the d7200 is a great camera to use re buttons AF Viewfinder etc etc, overall Avery improved shooting experience,
if this is what you think you would like re improvements then it would definitely be an upgrade.
IQ wise there is better DR iso etc which could be noticeable under some circumstances but not by a huge amount,
if someone offered me a d7200 for my d3300 I would accept it even though I love the lightness and simplicity of the d3300.
consider what it is you want regarding improvements and then make your decision.I doubt you would go back to the D3300 afterwards, the only reason I did eventually was I didn't need the improvements
of the D7200 for the very simple shooting I do.YMMV

I know I'm being a bit pedantic here, but no it won't.

The Sigma 8-16mm for DX cameras, with its 112° horizontal field if view, is as wide as anything you can get for Nikon FX cameras. (The widest lens for Nikon FX is the Sigma 12-24mm, also 112°.)

If you want to go *really* wide, you need to switch to Canon full frame and then drop the thick end of £3000 on the amazing Canon 11-24mm which has a 117° horizontal field of view. 11mm on full frame is just insane. But I'm not suggesting this is necessarily a sensible option!

On that one lens. I thought there was a 10-24 or so for FX?
