Been swithering for a while now about upgrading to the Canon 7d from my trusty old 500d which takes pretty good shots! I mostly dabble with landscape photography but want to get a bit more creative with it so would be interested to get some feedback as to whether the 7d is worth the money considering I'm only doing it for my own enjoyment, Cheers!

How do you want to be creative, the 7D has the edge for sports and birding, but I expect your 500D can certainly do what you take at present. Perhaps some glass would be more appropriate.

I would suggest thinking about full frame would be something to factor in rather than a more advanced crop camera if you are looking for an improvement in landscape shots, or buy some good L lenses and keep the 500d.

The 7D has many improvements over the 500D burst rate, better/faster AF etc although I doubt very much that you will find image quality any better. I went from a 550D to 7D and I found the output very much like for like.

Id say get the new 70d instead its newer and yes not pro spec body but you get more for your money internally

As above I think you would be better off with better glass or if you have that go FF. But with landscapes your not going to be using a lot of the features the 7D offers.

As above. Good glass and/or FF. if I was going for a crop body I'd look at the 70D. Fine camera though the 7D is its getting a bit long in the tooth now.

Thanks for all the advice! given me some ideas to think about, I cant afford all the expensive glass I would like so will plod on with what I have for now, read some reviews about the 7d and just thought it sounded like a good step from what I have at present but will maybe reconsider and just try and try and get a bit more out of my old 500d.

try either a canon 10-22mm uwa or go for a secondhand 24-105 L lens or a 17-40 L

uwa will give you the chance to play and do things in a different way with your approach to landscape, or see the difference in image quality with the L glass.

I have full frame and crop bodies and I can spend all day shooting on the crop and 10-22mm, I was also very pleased with the improvement in image quality when I put the 24-105 on a 600d body on a trip to new york as I wanted something a little lighter to carry along with the flip screen, I was not dissapointed.
One of these lenses would fall within the budget you were going to spend and will add to your experience when shooting landscape.
