i have been thinking of buying a .co.uk url and some web hosting space, Mainly as a place i can use to house my best shots maybe even talk a bit about them.

i want to take my photography serious this year, and think it would be a good thing to have to document my year and hopefully follow my progression :D

i am a completly new to this so what will i need to have what new skills will i need to learn also?

url - i have a name already
web hosting space - how much/where from?
anything else?

thanks in advance

blacknight.com, i have just gone with :)

you can download template sites OR try and build one your self by learning a language.

Hosting.

It all you want is a relatively simple website for the purposes which you mention then your first option is your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Most ISP's provide subscribers with a fairly generous amount of webspace, the cost of which is included in your Broadband package. You should also receive free tools and templates that will allow even the most inexperienced novice to setup and manage a simple website. The downside of using your ISP is that you will probably need to incorporate your ISP's name in your URL. So if your ISP is "GeeWhiz Broadband" your URL may read something like yourname.geewhiz.co.uk which of course you may not want.

If you would prefer to use a dedicated HSP (Hosting Service Provider) then in the UK I would recommend either 1&1 or FastHosts. I have sites hosted by both of these providers. Neither is perfect but both provide a good service at the price. One advantage of using an HSP is that you can use a URL of your choice (providing that it is available) so you could have a URL such as yourname.co.uk All HSP's also offer free software, templates and plenty of guidance to setting up your website.

If you have found the above helpful and if you reply to me then I will provide you with some detailed guidelines on how to actually setup your website.

Have a look at one.com they are not bad if all you want to do is host a site,

Have you checked the sticky at the top of this sub forum? Contains lots of useful info.

TBH its not too hard to get designing and coding one yourself. I would recommend looking into HTML and CSS, possibly PHP too. If your at all technically/logically minded its not that hard to do with a bit of reading and playing.

You can use an open source freeware viewer for your gallery which are free, look good, and are easy to setup. I use simpleviewer on my site, it looks great however does require flash.

Simpleviewer isn't open source AFAIK, and you have to pay to customize it. That said, it is quite good, though there are better (free) options.

I did it the easy route.

I went with Godaddy and bought a URL
went to www.bludomain.com and bought a template (you can buy the URL there too if you like but Godaddy was cheaper), and chose to host with Blu.

That's about it, upload photos to template, fiddle with template, and my site is in my sig.

thanks for all the replies, i have asked sumone i know to design me a template as thats what he does payed him £20 and that he understands that i need it to be very simple to maintain and upload pictures myself as i know nothing

things i have asked for are -

when some1 visits the site i want them to be greated with a image* that they have to click to enter to the about me page which then displays the other tabs

main tabs, "about me" , "Gallery" , "contact me" ,

about me page

gallery page

contact me page

i want a gallery thumbnails of all the pics

click on a pic, it will show a larger 1 wiith a "next" and a "previous" clickables to go back or go forward 1 picture

description under each picture if i choose to

comment box for each picture for visitors to use

styling- modern, clean sharp looking

not decided on colours yet im thinking about black and silver/grey

he says it shouldnt be a problem to implement what i asked for, hope it comes out good

any more advice please let me know.

Mine does all the above except making a comment on each photo, which frankly i rather they don't do it as it's a gallery, not a crit section. That's what my blog is for, there's a comment section for each post and I welcome posts for that.

Mine cost me a bit more than £20 bit it's worth every single penny, i've don't know anyone who's seen it have trouble navigating it, most are impressed by it.

I mean mine was so easy to do, i had it up and running within 90mins of getting the template, half that time i spent editing my images.

Sounds like a spitting image of my site :)

All done with HTML/CSS/PHP with Simpleviewer for the gallery.

As for simpleviewer, all i have is a tiny url on the bottom of the gallery. Its pretty customisable in way of layout and colours. You have to pay if you want uploading software etc... but you can do pretty much everything without it anyway.
