Right, I've been a programmer for quite a few years now, but I've always fancied making a game. This will be the first real game I've made (I don't count snake as being a proper game!) so I'm going to keep it pretty straight forward.
I'm a very big fan of the old Monkey Island and Discworld type games which seem to be non-existent nowadays. If you're not familiar with these games, basically they are adventure puzzle games where you go round and talk to people and pick things up and have to do things in a certain order to be able to complete a particular stage.
The reason I've chose this type of game is because I think it will be more straight-forward to program, and most importantly, I love Monkey Island
Now, what I need are ideas and artwork.
Ideas
There should be a theme that can expand and continue into more levels. The thing that made Monkey Island such a good game was that it was a fictional world and was very expandable. It would be nice to get a photography theme in there somehow but I think it would be too limiting (and possibly boring??) to base it totally around photography.
Artwork
This would be a key area to the success really. I'd like it to be cartoon style like Monkey Island is. No mind blowing virtual reality graphics - I want it to be old-school cartoon style which doesn't need a great computer to run.
Scope
To begin with I'm looking at just one level, but with the opportunity to expand and add more levels to create a good storyline. The first level in games like these is usually pretty straight-forward and is used to get you accustomed with the user interface and style of play. It will start off with easy puzzles and as each puzzle is done, newer things will be available and the puzzles and game area gradually get harder and bigger.
So, I open it out to your imaginations to help me create this game in the form of themes, storylines and puzzles and hopefully people will be willing to contribute the artwork.
One final note - I'm not doing this for money, this is for my own satisfaction and everyone's enjoyment and it will not cost anything. Consequently I can't pay anyone to help so anyone that would like to help with artwork/ideas/testing should do so out of interest and anticipation for the game
