Thinking of getting a Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens

Hi

Has any got or used a Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens Clicky Here as Im thinking of getting one, any advice appreciated

TIA

Dave

Hi Dave, i have one that i use with my 40D. In my opinion it is a good lens, my copy i'm particularly happy with. If you look at my Flickr page you will find that most of the shots were taken with that lens. The pics are crops of between 1/3rd to 1/2 frame and have only had levels and a little sharpening done. The rugby was hand held with OS off whilst the bird shots had it on.
I have never had a lens with OS/IS on it before so cannot compare it with any other lens sorry, but it seems ok to me. One thing i will say is that is is a heavy lens to carry around for long periods.

If you have a Canon and its anything other than a 1D series then it won't autofocus above f5.6.

Because Canon's AF system on anything other than a 1 series needs f5.6 or wider for it to work. (its f8 on a 1 series btw)

Remember I'm not talking about the aperture you have set for taking the photo... this is about when the focus system kicks in - it opens up the lens to maximum aperture to let in as much light as possible to enable it to pick out the subject. Once AF is complete and you press the button the lens aperture is set to whatever the picture will be taken at.

Aaaahhh, I was just being nosy and inqusisitve, t'was all :D

Yes it will AF on all the canon range.
Sigma F6.3 lenses trick the camera into thinking it's a 5.6 so it still works.

Ta Werecow, but it is Max aperture f/5

f/5-6.3 it says in its name which means it'll be f5 at 150mm and f6.3 at 500mm. Though the camera won't think it ever goes over f5.6 :)

When a zoom lens has an f-stop range quoted like that it means the maximum aperture size changes as it goes through it's zoom range

I bought one a month or so ago and am pleased with the little time I've spent with it. Not had a chance for it to shine yet but overall it's quite a beast to hold.

i had one, but to be honest i want a 100-400, lol

If you're serious about your photography i'd definitely recommend sticking it out and saving up a bit more for the canon 100-400.
I went down the cheaper lens route once apon a time and really regretted it. I wasted a lot of money as i inevitably got the more expensive lenses in the end anyway.

I am serious, but I think I'lll get one though, my friend has the none OS version Im going to ask him can I take a few shots with it I'll post them for you to see, and then I'll decide for sure thanks for your help everyone
