Thinking of ditching d90 for nex-5n

Hey guys n gals

This year I have barely used my d90 setup and I think this comes down to the size of the equipment. I'm only taking family shots of my 3 children so nothing too serious.

My current kit consists of

D90
50mm f1.8
Sigma 18-50 f2.8
Sigma 70-200 f2.8
Nikon sb-600
And various bags etc

I'm seriously considering a nex-5n to replace it all. I'd go for the 18-55 and 16mm lenses

So any thoughts? Is this a good move?
Is there a massive difference between the nex 5 and the 5n?

Thanks in advance

I think youre going to miss the manual controls and your good quality lenses and flash, when you exchange for a screw on flash, slow average kit lenses and awkward menus. IMO a NEX is an additional camera, not a replacement for a good DSLR.

Thanks, I'm just finding that I'm not using the d90 due to its size. Even with just the 50mm attached

Ive had various NEXs since launch, I guess Im hopeful that theyd release some good pancakes that make it truly compact but they havent. Inbetween Ive had and have M4/3 cameras like the GF3 which really is compact with the 14 or 20mm pancakes and find it gets quite a bit of use, the only area the NEX excels is sensor size and high ISO performance.

The NEX with kit lens is like an inbetween, not truly compact, not quite DSLR size, you still need a bag unless you have a flashers coat to carry it in, or you need to only carry the 16mm which I find an awkward focal length. But may suit others.

Thanks I'll give it a look.
My dad has a nex 5 which I've borrowed today so just need to compare the differences really.

Mostly I think I'll miss the 70-200 range as I wouldn't replace it if I brought an nex

Check out M4/3, loads of lenses available incl fast primes and long zooms.

For non commercial users, ditching dSLR and moving into a mirrorless system would helpin reducing weight. Looking at your current lineup in lenses, your main issue is that finding constant 2.8 zoom for the nex system.

As you are moving from a crop APS system to another you shouldn't have issues with focal length and bokeh, as long as you find the same equivalent lens in NEX mount.

Why not get a smaller Dslr, such as the D3100

Because that's still quite a big camera compared to the nex range.

Playing with my dads nex 5 tonight and it seems alright. I like Bokeh in my shots and have put the nex 5 into aperture priority mode and produced some quite creamy backgrounds with just the standard kit lens.

The Nex 5n has a better sensor, better video quality, touch screen and the ability to use the electronic viewfinder.

If you need to keep a constant f2.8, then you'll need the Sony 16mm 2.8, Sigma 19mm 2.8 and the Sigma 30mm f2.8. If you need to go wider, the 16mm has the option of an adapter that gives you around 14mm. There's also the Sony 50mm 1.8 to replace your current 50mm.

The kit lens is just that, a kit lens. Nothing special but works when you need options. People have this strange idea that the kit lens is massive but it's still small compared to other companies.

If you need an elaborate flash system then I would probably forget about the Nex system (other than the 7), however this thing will be coming out soon.

The NEX is a lot more pocketable than any small DSLR on the market. Even with the kit lens, you can fit it in your jacket pocket. If you need to put it in a small pocket, take the 30mm or the 16mm.

But I'll always say, try out the m4/3 system. Especially with the current deals going on (GF3 and kit lens for £200 after cash back).

EVF? The D90 has OVF, and its free, not an addon, like the NEX flash and EVF.

16-50 2.8 doesnt compare to 18-200 2.8.

You are in a fortunate situation where you can try the NEX and see if its limitations dont bother you. Use it for a few days, get one if you feel you like it.

I was comparing against the Nex 5 and the Nex 5n. Sorry for the confusion.

I think people are getting too hung up on specs and lenses here. A 70-200 2.8 is useless if it's just sat in a bag. An Nex or even a phone camera is great if used!

This is true.

This is my point.
I know my lenses for my D90 are quite good for a hobbyist's kit but the fact is im just not using them enough to justify keeping the setup.

I have 3 young children and when we go out I have enough to lug around and just end up leaving the camera at home.

I believe that with a smaller camera im more likely to take it out and actually use it.

I dont want to go down the route of a point and shoot and think that the NEX range is a good compromise between size and features

The best camera is the one you have with you!
After many different DSLR systems I've went to micro 4/3 recently in a bid to actually own a camera that I'm going to take with me and its been used a lot more then my "full" DSLR's were.

NEX looks good especially IQ but the lenses aren't quite there yet. Micro 4/3 is fairly cheap depending on what you want to buy and theres a good selection of lenses.

I don't actually know what a micro 4/3 camera is.
Looks like I need to look a bit

Thanks, do you have any recommendations?

I'm looking at the gf3 on YouTube at the moment

I had a D90 and have a Nex 3 now, and there's no way a nex would adequately replace something like a D90 (IMHO of course).

As I see it, arguments based on the relative merits of each are null and void in this case. An NEX taken with you will always take 100% better pictures than a DSLR left at home. If you don't use it you've nothing to lose by trying something else.

The Nex 5N with any lens apart from the 16mm is not really pocketable therefore you will need a bag.

Stick to the D90 and 50mm or Sigma - that will give you better images than any other system camera for only a fraction bigger size.

Or get a GF3 and 20mm pancake. Not quite as good but you can put it in a pocket. The 14mm is even smaller!

Having said that, on a recent holiday - I own the latter two combos and have owned the first combo - my Canon S95 got more use than the other cameras - it's just so small and light:)

I moved from D90 to Nex-5n and whilst the output from the Nex was good, the lack of viewfinder (without buying the bulky ad-on) also the separate flash meant that you have to plan shoots before you leave, either that or carry it everywhere with you.

I also tried it with various Nikon lenses via an adapter, but it felt well out of proportion, this also means carrying extra lenses.

I now use a D5100 as it's less bulky than the D90 but still feels right in the hand. My other half likes superzoom compacts and on bike trips or other occasions that space is a premium, I will use that.

Everyone will have their own opinion, but I would consider this option if I were you.

Cheers

well im now looking at the Fuji X10 and X100..

:)
